Abstract/Summary:
What does Rudolf Steiner mean by pure thinking? This question has been the thought guiding my inquiry concerning the concept and experience of intellectual intuition as this concept was developed and articulated in the philosophies of Kant and the German Idealists, and further developed by Steiner.;Starting with a brief discussion concerning the rise of the modern experience of thinking as this was given expression by Descartes, this dissertation examines Kant's concept of intellectual intuition and the thing-in-itself, Fichte's adoption of intellectual intuition in relation to the "I," Schelling's appropriation of intellectual intuition in service to the conceptual form of his concept and practice of imaginative thinking, and Hegel's purification of the concept of intellectual intuition in his Logic..;Kant and the German Idealists are then brought into relation with the pure thinking of Rudolf Steiner as this has been exhibited in his books Truth and Science and The Philosophy of Spiritual Activity. .;The conclusion presents some consequences of the experience of intellectual intuition as these can be developed from the foundation of the German Idealists and Rudolf Steiner. These consequences will include the recognition that the concept of intellectual intuition was not developed into actual perception of intellectual intuition by Kant nor the German Idealists Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel. If perception had been attained, the form of thinking developed by Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel would have had to include the concept and experience of supersensible reality, and would have necessitated the inclusion of supersensible perception in the form of pure thinking activity as the culmination of their respective philosophies.
