Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation describes the rationale for using sandplay as a drama therapy technique. It further links analytical psychology to sandplay and to drama therapy through focus on the dramatic process as representational and dialectical.; It is concluded that the rationale for using sandplay in drama therapy is in its following connections to criteria derived from drama therapy literature: (1) that sandplay is an effective catalyst for the representational and dialectical movement of the dramatic process; (2) that it is an effective container for the client's story; (3) that it facilitates the discovery and exploration of role; and (4) that it is effective in helping the client to reach the confluence of thought and feeling that make insight and catharsis possible and is therefore an effective distancing device. Sandplay is seen as a theatrical medium that allows the client to engage actively in working toward the goals of symptom relief, emotional and physical integration, personal growth, aesthetic understanding, insight and catharsis.; On the usefulness of analytical psychology as a theoretical model for drama therapy, it is concluded that analytical psychology offers many areas of extensive writing on the dramatic process that are potentially useful in drama therapy. Particular references are made to C. G. Jung's theories of compensation, archetypes, complexes, images, and of active imagination, as well as his work toward establishing a view of the psyche as having a poetic basis and a dramatic structure.
