With the ongoing process of globalization, people are today faced with the increasingly accelerating pace of life, which results in more serious psychological stresses as well as physical and mental health problems. As an effective treatment of relieving mental illness in psychology, the sandplay therapy becomes more popular and earns great concerns.Drawn from Chapter Four, Book Two, The Handbook of Sandplay Therapy by Barbara A. Turner, Ph.D., this translation project concerns the mythological considerations of development in sandplay. It originates from the World Tree, Yggdrasil, in Norse mythology where the three roots of Yggdrasil and their wells have been vividly pictured. From the perspective of origin of thought, ideology and case study, it gives a detailed account of sandplay work.Sandplay therapy is believed to be included in psychology, so this handbook is recognized as a social science text, and moreover the handbook the author has translated involves Norse mythology and other cultural background information, thus characterized by many professional terminologies, cultural connotation and relatively obscure language. With full preparation such as experiencing sandplay in person, the author has translated the text meticulously by applying what has been acquired on translation studies and various translation strategies. Then, consulting related professionals, the author has also polished and proofread the draft of translation until its publication. Eventually, the report has been presented like this.Taking foreignization as the main guidance theory while domestication as the complementary one in translation, the author has carried out an in-depth analysis of the translation from the perspectives of lexis, sentence and discourse, during which various specific translation strategies adopted in the translation such as free translation, conversion, amplification and discourse coherence etc. have been thoroughly presented. It is concluded that the translation has ensured the scientificity, accuracy and fluency of the target language. By analyzing and summarizing the translation project the author is responsible for, the report is intended to solve the practical problems encountered in the translation process and reveal the links between psychology and mythology, thus promoting the domestic development of sandplay and the cultural interactions between China and foreign countries, and also hopefully providing some useful reference for the translation of social science texts.
