Abstract/Summary:
iabetes mellitus is one of the most common and significant chronic diseases affecting Americans, not only because of its high prevalence and mortality rate, but also because of its substantial impact on quality of life and economic costs. Hospitalization costs due to diabetes make up 41% of the total economic costs of diabetes in the United States. In spite of its essential role in reducing the burden of diabetes, information on costs and rates of hospitalization for diabetes is sparse. The purpose of this study is to understand the diabetes hospital charges, demographics, diagnoses, and procedures and to provide total and average charges and rates of hospital episodes by using 1995 South Carolina hospital discharge data.
