Abstract/Summary:
This is the report of the experimental study on improvement of tribological properties of four modern steels (Orvar Supreme, AerMet 100, QRO 90 Supreme, and Sverker 21) implanted with low to medium dose nitrogen ions.; The main components of this work are: (a) Tribological properties including Knoop microhardness, thin layer microhardness measurement, wear, friction, dynamic nanohardness, residual stress and thermal softening evaluations of the nitrogen ion implanted steels with doses from 5 × 1015 ions/cm2 to 1.2 × 1017 ions/cm 2 at room temperature. (b) Analysis of surface changes induced by ion implantation by Grazing angle X-ray Diffraction (GXRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES).
