At first we synthesized the intermediate of 2-eleven-alkyl-l-hydroxyethyl imidazole by the lauric acid reaction with N-(2-Hydroxyethyl) ethylenediamine by the way of solvent method. The imidazoline boric acid ester was synthesized when the intermediate reacts with boric acid with the help of solvent which was removed by decompression distillation.In the first-step reaction, an appropriate preparation process was investigated after single-factor experiments. The suitable reaction temperature, reactant ratio and time were discovered. The resultants were analyzed by Fourier transformed infrared absorption spectroscopy in order to calculate the reaction efficiency and select the appropriate process conditions.In the preparation of the single imidazoline boric acid ester, the influence of the solvent was investigated firstly. The results showed that it restrained the by-reaction by taking off the water produced by the reaction. It was easy to observe the reaction by collecting the water. Then it was investigated the appropriate reaction temperature, reactant ratio and reaction time. By infrared absorption spectroscopy, the appropriate process conditions were educed.The tribological properties of the prepared imidazoline boric acid ester were carried out with MQ-800 four-ball tribometer and were compared with commercial hydrosoluble extreme pressure additive EP-1 EP410-9. The results showed that the samples containing boric acid ester had the similar extreme, pressure properties compared with the samples containing commercial extreme pressure additive either in oil or in water. The extreme pressure value of the solution containing 2% boric acid ester reached 431.2 N in water and reached 548.8 N in oil. However, their tribological performances are different due to borate, when they were added to oil and to water. It improved the friction reduction and wear resistance in water. At the same time, imidazoline boric acid ester is amicable to environment. It's no poison, no smell and metal selectivity. It's a multifunctional lubricant additive duo to its anti-rusting and anti-oxidizing property.
