Abstract/Summary:
This research emphasizes on the development of an effective technique for electrolytic in-process dressing (ELID) of super-abrasive wheels for high-speed grinding. ELID is a precise and consistent dressing process. The existing ELID is only effective in grinding with a wheel surface speed of less than 30m/s. Its inefficiency in the speed range of 30 to 250 m/s prevents it from being used for high-speed grinding. Limitations of existing ELID techniques are analyzed. Innovative electrodes were designed and tested to advance ELID grinding techniques and realize HELID (high-speed ELID) grinding. An innovative hydrodynamic foil electrode has been developed. The performance of hydrodynamic foil electrodes is studied. Experiments confirmed the effectiveness of foil electrode at a speed of 84 m/s in ELID process.
