Abstract/Summary:
We have made a precision search for CP violation in hyperon decays, hyperon decays being sensitive to exotic sources of CP violation that, for example, kaon decays are not. The measured CP observable is AXL= aXaL -aX&d1; aL&d1; /aX aL+ aX&d1;a L&d1; , where aX and aL are the decay parameters for X-L p- and Lpp - , and the corresponding quantities for the antiparticles are overlined. Based on a sample of 118 million X- decays and 42 million X&d1;+ decays from the 1999 Fermilab fixed-target run, about 10% of the total HyperCP data set, the resulting measurement is: AXL = [1.5 ± 5.1(stat) ± 4.5(syst)] × 10−4. This result is consistent with no asymmetry and has a statistical sensitivity over 20 times more precise than the best published result.
