We have made a precision search for CP violation in hyperon decays, hyperon decays being sensitive to exotic sources of CP violation that, for example, kaon decays are not. The measured CP observable is , where and are the decay parameters for and , and the corresponding quantities for the antiparticles are overlined. Based on a sample of 118 million decays and 42 million decays from the 1999 Fermilab fixed-target run, about 10% of the total HyperCP data set, the resulting measurement is: = [1.5 ± 5.1(stat) ± 4.5(syst)] × 10−4. This result is consistent with no asymmetry and has a statistical sensitivity over 20 times more precise than the best published result. |
