Abstract/Summary:
Leadership characteristics that foster culture change and staff retention in an organization providing housing and services to the aging are uncovered using a microanalysis technique in this embedded case study. Although recent research (Thyer, 2003) in healthcare environments conclude that transformational leadership (Bass & Avolio, 1990; Burns, 1978) is the style most conducive to achieving the two outcomes, the author of this dissertation posits that elements of Level 5 leadership (Collins, 2001) and servant leadership (Greenleaf, 1991) are also critical. Culture change and staff retention are imperative to the vitality and success of the aging services field over the next 2 decades.
