Abstract/Summary:
Technology in the United States steel industry has become increasingly important as steelmakers are driven to reduce costs and improve quality to remain competitive as they come under pressure from imports. However, there is limited information on steel industry technologies and information available on keys to successful implementation of such technologies.; This study focuses on one technology project available to today's steel industry, namely the Scrap OptiMiser. A case study approach was utilized to examine levels of implementation success with said technology among a few steel mills. Implementation, as referred to throughout this study, is defined as the activity of carrying out a technology project. Carrying out a technology project involves acquiring and executing new expertise, skills or knowledge that in this case takes the form of a software program. This study's findings reveal that there are certain variables such as communication, comprehension, and commitment that can have a positive influence on implementation success of a particular technology project.
