Abstract/Summary:
Ad hoc networks, which do not rely on any infrastructure such as access points or base stations, can be deployed rapidly and inexpensively even in situations with geographical or time constraints. Research in this dissertation concentrates on improving scalabiltiy, trustworthiness and security of wireless ad hoc networks.; As more and more wireless devices connect to the network, it is important to design a scalable routing protocol for ad hoc networks. An anchor-based routing protocol, a scalable routing protocol for ad hoc networks was developed, which combines the advantages of multi-path routing strategy and geographic routing strategy. It is very efficient and scalable, and avoids the burden of GPS support.; In wireless ad hoc networks, a node may act selfishly, such as dropping packets that it should have forwarded for other nodes, to save its own resources. A trustworthy ad hoc architecture was proposed to motivate cooperation of nodes in ad hoc networks and excude selfish nodes.; The nature of ad hoc networks makes them vulnerable to attacks, especially in the routing protocol. An on-demand secure routing protocol for ad hoc networks was developed. It is based on a distributed trust management mechanism. The protocol does not need the support of a trusted third party and discovers multiple routes between two nodes.; Bluetooth is a new developing wireless networking technology for short range applications. A link key establishment protocol for Bluetooth scatternets was developed. The proposed protocol has the same security level as that of the piconet key establishment protocol and is compatible with the Bluetooth Specifications.; Keywords.
