Abstract/Summary:
This study will summarize the process of planning, administrating and implementing a fine arts symposium. As such, it is a distillation of the administrative process that resulted in the symposium and concert held at Texas Tech University, September 28, 2002, entitled, Becquer Symposium: Merging Poetry and Music. Two departments sponsored the symposium: Latin American and Iberian Studies and the School of Music.; Consistent with the objectives of the Ph.D. in Fine Arts Program with a specialization in Administration, this study demonstrates the application of administrative principles in a specific subject area of music. The application is limited further to a specific place, the cultural performance context at Texas Tech University. While it delineates within this framework the standard areas of administrative concern: scheduling, personnel, budget, publicity and contacts, it also serves as a checklist and planner to assist cultural events organizers. By using the context of the symposium to illuminates the broader issues of administrative planning and organization, it provides an answer to the question: what are the most useful practices for producing interdisciplinary symposia at a public university?...
