Abstract/Summary:
Black business owners only represent 4% of American businesses; however, Blacks represent 12.7% of the total United States population (Commerce, 2001). This qualitative, phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of Black business owners located Tampa (Hillsborough County), Florida area, relating to factors relating to their success in launching, operating, and growing a new business. Thematic analysis of interview data using NVivo 2.0 qualitative software program was conducted. The data suggested that black business owners might benefit from the learned experiences of other black business owners by capitalizing on those experiences as a reference point for mapping out a plan for success.
