Abstract/Summary:
Correctional institutions across the country are responsible for a rapidly growing number of inmates. Correctional officers have direct daily contact with these inmates. They have firsthand knowledge of the offenders' interactions within the prison ranks. Numerous studies examining the perceptions of correctional officers have uncovered a complex set of attitudes, experiences, and beliefs that correlate to rehabilitation efforts and outcomes of inmates. A study was conducted to measure the correlation between years of service in the role of the correctional officer and correctional officers' perspectives regarding rehabilitation of inmates. No correlation was discovered, and possible explanations were discussed.
