Abstract/Summary:
The current study examined the client's role in the psychotherapy process in a treatment team approach format. The single case study focused on the client's perspective on this approach, and utilized daily self-report measures (the Session Rating Scale, the Outcome Rating Scale, the SF-36, and the Working Alliance Inventory) as well as interviews, or debriefings. The client came to Pyrysys Psychology Group (an innovative treatment program which utilizes a team approach to therapy) to seek treatment for a cocaine addiction. He stayed for the duration of one month. During this time, he had multiple daily sessions with a team of 8 different psychotherapists. Each session was videotaped, and significant sections were transcribed. There had not been any previous studies on the treatment team approach in the psychotherapy setting as implemented by Pyrysys. The literature review examined the different approaches to addiction treatment, factors (such as the therapeutic alliance) which are critical to the change process, as well as various types of teams and how they operate. The generally high ratings on the measures, as well as the positive feedback given during the debriefings suggested the client's high level of satisfaction with the treatment. The treatment at Pyrysys appeared to be effective for the client in terms of meeting his treatment goals and reducing the severity of his presenting problems. The client expressed his gratitude for getting something different and helpful from each therapist on his team. At the one month follow-up, the client reported his success in maintaining his newly drug-free lifestyle. The limitations of the study were discussed, as were suggestions for future research.
