Abstract/Summary:
In this dissertation, an indirect adaptive controller for a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is designed to damp oscillations and enhance the stability of power systems. A combined on-line identifier and a Pole-Shift (PS) feedback controller, as an adaptive power system stabilizer, is applied to a STATCOM device connected at the middle bus of a single machine infinite bus system. Recursive Least Squares (RLS) and Adaptive Linear Element Neuron (ADALINE) employing the MIT rule are used as two identification techniques to track the change of the plant parameters on-line and update the controller.; The PS control uses the system model parameters given by the identifier to calculate control. The control is based on the principle that the open-loop poles are shifted towards the centre of the unit circle in the z-plane. The control is designed to achieve the desired closed-loop performance.; Simulation studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed indirect adaptive controller in damping the oscillations and enhancing the stability of the power system in comparison to the conventional controller.
