Abstract/Summary:
This qualitative case study was conducted at a consulting company based in New England, and involved semi-structured interviews with nine participants who had worked on successful software engineering projects. The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions and interaction of the project managers, business analysts, and software engineers during requirements engineering process in successful projects. This study also includes individuals in the solution architect role which is similar to a software engineer. The problem of software project failure has been well documented. Organizations lost US$122 million for every US$1 billion spent on IT projects due to poor project performance (Pulse of the Profession, 2016). The requirements engineering process is one of the key factors in the quality of the software product (Kabaale & Kituyi, 2015) and the success of the requirements engineering process can have an effect on overall project success. Four major categories emerged from the analysis: (1) the relationship among the team members, (2) continual communication among the three team members during the requirements engineering process, (3) actions taken by the three team members during the requirements engineering process, and (4) individual contributions to the requirements engineering process. Based on the themes, recommendations were made for what project managers and those in leadership positions dealing with software projects can do during the requirements engineering process to increase the chance of overall project success.
