Abstract/Summary:
This study is a content analysis of two contemporary adolescent magazines examining story content of both feature and general category articles and advertisement content. This study was conducted to assist library media specialists in making informed decisions on magazine selection. The categories used for analyzing the content are derived from a similar study conducted by McComas in 1997. For the purpose of direct comparison, areas of study and the topics as used by McComas are identical. The amount of space occupied is assessed as well as the content of articles and photographs. Photographic content was analyzed for gender, race, non-celebrity figures, and celebrity figures. The review of the literature discusses adolescent development, the role of adolescent magazines in that development, and a brief history of censorship in America.
