Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation utilizes case study research to explain similarities and differences in post-implementation outcomes across organizations that have implemented or upgraded their ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems. The empirical study examines the influences of antecedent conditions on ERP post-implementation outcomes. The antecedent conditions that are examined in each of four organizations are: IT (Information Technology) governance, interorganizational collaborations, and interorganizational learning.;From a theoretical perspective, the study revealed the influence that varying levels of IT governance and interorganizational collaborations have on post-implementation outcomes. The major finding is that while this period of stabilization cannot be eliminated, it can be shortened and less disruptive if the organization has formal processes, structures, and mechanisms in place to manage the complex changes involved in system implementations like ERP. While effective IT governance does not guarantee success in the ERP post-implementation phase, it does ensure that this phase is planned for in advance, and that the necessary resources and contingencies have been put in place to address post go-live issues in a timely manner.;This study also revealed that the nature of the interorganizational collaborations impacted post-implementation outcomes. All organizations in the study engaged partners for their implementation. The outcomes form these collaborations resulted in varying results and presented challenges in all organizations.;In-depth interviews were conducted with directors, managers, and leads in each organization. Patterns were identified across cases for each of the four antecedent conditions. The evidence from the case studies highlighted consistently key factors that influence post-implementation outcomes. The study also surfaced common pitfalls and key lessons learned regarding the ERP post-implementation phase.
