Abstract/Summary:
This qualitative, phenomenological research study explored perceptions, experiences, and understandings regarding gay and lesbian church participation among 20 male and female church leaders in African American Christian churches in Houston, Texas. Relevant study results revealed five basic themes: acceptance, nonacceptance, forgiveness/atonement, sin, and love. Other relevant study results were that generally gays and lesbians were welcome to attend the church service (90%) although some churches did not allow them to become church members. The majority of churches (85%) did not allow gays and lesbians to serve in church leadership positions.
