Abstract/Summary:
Cystoscopy and ureteroscopy are common urological procedures performed in male and female patients of all age groups. These procedures can be performed under local, regional, or general anesthesia. In this study, the use of 2% lidocaine gel (Uro-Jet) was evaluated for effectiveness in decreasing post procedure urethral burning pain, urinary urgency, and dysuria in male patients in the early post procedure period. The amount of intravenous meperidine requested for post procedure pain was also evaluated.;The study population consisted of 78 consenting male participants 21 to 80 years of age who presented for cystoscopy/ureteroscopy surgery under general anesthesia. The participants were randomly assigned to either the control or experimental group by alternating every other participant to the control or experimental group. The participants in the control group had nothing instilled into the urethra at the end of the procedure. The experimental group participants had 20 milliliters of 2% lidocaine gel (Urojet) instilled into the urethra immediately after their procedure. The findings from this study revealed that the 2% lidocaine gel group had significantly less urethral burning pain (p < .001) and dysuria (p < .001). The 2% lidocaine gel group had significantly less urinary urgency at the 15 minute time point (p < .05) only. The amount of intravenous meperidine requested at the 6 different time points was not significant between the groups. The total amount of intravenous meperidine requested between the groups was not significant (p = .180). The results of this study suggest that intraurethral 2% lidocaine gel can help decrease urethral burning pain and dysuria after cystoscopy/ureteroscopy under general anesthesia.
