| Nowadays, people are creating increasingly more personal digital records, which are of great value in the long run, but unfortunately are not preserved properly. As a part of human cultural heritage and social memory, these records deserve the attention of the archives and their necessary preservation measures.This paper analyzed the theoretical foundation and legal ground for the archives to get involved in the preservation of personal digital records, and conducted a survey on the status quo of some archives' relevant work. On this basis and by learning from advanced experiences home and abroad, this paper provided coping strategies for archives from 4 aspects of the transformation of concepts, the pre-custodial intervention, the archival management after reception into archives and the education and instruction of the archives towards the public.The second part firstly introduced concepts related to and the range of personal digital records:extended the connotation of the word "record", and defined the meaning and scope of personal digital records. Then, reviewed the management theory related to personal digital records, including the appraisal theory and the post-custodial theory. At last, analyzed the legal ground for archives to carry out the work of personal digital records'preservation and it's affirmed that they are qualified.Through an online survey of the websites of the province-level comprehensive archives and a telephone interview with some representative archives, the third part preliminarily combed out the situation of our archival institutions'work on the preservation of celebrities and ordinary people's digital records and their background situation for performing this work. Then, it was concluded that the problems in the archives'current work are the lag of concepts, the delay in the records'collecting, the simplified management measures and the lack of the education and instruction towards the public.The 4th,5th,6th and 7th parts respectively provided strategies for the solution of the above 4 ploblems, among which the strategy of the 4th part is transforming concepts, which is the first step for arvchives to take in order to cope with the challenges of preserving personal digital records. As to the specific methods of the concepts'transformation, this part discussed from 2 aspects of recognizing the importance of the preservation of personal digital records and rethinking the obstacles and problems in the process of records'collecting.Straight after that, the 5th part discussed the collecting of personal digital records, with emphasis on the pre-custodial intervention. The part firstly introduced the meaning of the pre-custodial intervention method. Then, on the basis of an analysis of individuals' behavior in creating and managing their records, and by drawing experiences from 3 examples of the Paradigm, Digital Lives and iKive projects, this part proposed a whole set of implementation procedures for the archives' pre-custodial intervention.The 6th part discussed the archival management upon the reception of personal digital records into archives. According to the different situation of archives,4 working paths are provided, which are initiating the work of custody from the personal digital archives on the physical media, relying on the digital repository of their own, drawing on management software, and cooperating with other institutions.The 7th part provided a new idea for archives to carry out the work of preserving personal digital records, namely educating and instructing the public to preserve their own digital records. Through this method, the archives can take advantage of the public's force, creating archives and preserving social memory shoulder to shoulder with them. Besides, this part showed 2 examples of relevant practices from the Library of Congress of America and from the archival administration of Shenyang city, and on basis of this, analyzed the difficulties and problems in the process of educating and instructing and their solutions. |
