Research On Hong Kong Cinema New Wave

The Hong Kong Cinema New Wave Movement from 1978 to 1984 was an important reform movement in the history of Hong Kong film development after World War Ⅱ.It was the main force that promoted the second transformation of Hong Kong film and profoundly affected the localization and modernization of Hong Kong film.This thesis takes modernity as the basic perspective for the overall study of the "Hong Kong Cinema New Wave",and uses a variety of research methods,such as cultural identity study,gender political analysis and version evolution research.I will place the"New Wave" in the macro context of the history of Hong Kong Film Development,and examine its definition,occurrence,innovation and influence.The thesis is divided into seven parts:In introduction part.Firstly,I will explain the selected topic significance.Secondly,on the basis of combing the research status quo,I will points out that the existing achievements exit the following problems:lack of the overall research on the Cinema New Wave,lack of standards to define the directors and works of the Cinema New Wave,innovative to the New Wave interpretation flows on the surface without going deep into the core values,ignoring the version evolution research of films.In response to these questions,this paper proposes new research ideas and outlines the innovations and breakthroughs that can be achieved.In chapter one,I will redraw the map of New Wave creation and define the directors,works and versions of New Wave cinemas.I hope this chapter could lay a premise and foundation for the later research.For a long time,the academia has not made a clear definition of New Wave’s directors and works,and lacks a set of academic evaluation and selection criteria,resulting in the falsification of the map of New Wave creation.This chapter will solve three problems:how to define New Wave director?how to select New Wave works?and how to verify the original version of New Wave works?Through answering these questions,I will try to draw a clear map of New Wave Creation.In chapter two,I will examine the background of the rise of Cinema New Wave The mainstream view of the academia holds that the Cinema New Wave is born out of the TV New Wave,This view pays attention to the continuity between the Two New Wave,but at the same time it ignores the pioneering exploration within the film industry before the Cinema New Wave.It was the bottleneck in the development of the film industry itself that gave the mainstream director of the Cinema New Wave a time opportunity cross the boundary from"TV"to"film".The rise of the Cinema New Wave,its background should be analyzed from both the film and TV Accordingly,this chapter expounds the exploration value of the Hong Kong Cinema Pioneer Exploration Tide and TV New Wave in the 1970s respectively,and points out that the former provides reference and guidance on research way for the TV New Wave and Cinema New Wave,I considers that the TV New Wave also lays a foundation to a certain extent for creative style of the Cinema New Wave.In chapter three,I will examine the interpretation of the modern value on New Wave Cinemas.Previous studies have emphasized that the "innovation" of the New Wave lies in the a refurbishment of film skills ",this superficial judgment has not penetrated into the exploration of value connotation.The New Wave Cinema is wrapped in the material shell of "modernization" and has the spiritual core of"modernity".It is the“subjective”film of "human",and the modern value of"subjectivity" of New Wave Cinemas can be conveyed through two different and related themes of "patricide" and "fatalism" Among them,"patricide" points to the subjective consciousness of "patriarchy" including the pursuit of individual destiny autonomy and social subjective freedom;"fatalism" refers to the plight of the subject who wants to "murder" but can not,which is reflected in "the plight of the beast" and"the confusion without roots".In chapter four,I will examine the form exploration of New Wave Cinemas.In the aesthetic performance,the New Wave Cinema localizes the modern western film language and forms the subjective "New Wave Aesthetics".Its innovation is reflected in the new realistic style of "docu-drama",the action emotion expression of "violent and cruel editing" and the pioneer experiment of color aesthetics.The formal "New Wave Aesthetics" and the modern value connotation of the New Wave reflect each other,and jointly reflect the "subjectivity" of "human".In chapter five,I will examine the influence of the Cinema New Wave on Hong Kong films.In terms of production,I will expound the contribution of the "Art Direction" position initiated by the New Wave to promotion of Hong Kong film professionalization;In the spirit of creation,taking the creation of some core directors of "Post-New Wave" as an example,explaining the influence and inheritance of the spirit of the New Wave;In terms of genre evolution,taking the historical evolution of"undercover film" as the core,I will discuss the new expansion of the mainstream film genre by the New Wave.The conclusion of this thesis summarizes the historical contribution,innovative value and enlightenment meaning of the New Wave,and reflects on its shortcomings:Firstly,compared with "the fifth generation of mainland china" and "Taiwan New Wave",it lacks a unified "visual label" in terms of formal aesthetic representation;Secondly,after the new wave merges into the mainstream,it strengthens the commercialization of the film industry,making the already declining artistic film creation more difficult.Finally,I look forward to the current Hong Kong film "The New New Wave" can inherit and carry forward the rebellious youth essence of "New Wave",and set off another magnificent youth storm in the new era context!...
