The Research On The Manor Economy In Tang And Song

The formation and development of manor is one of the important achievements of civilization of ancient economic society in ancient China.Especially in the Tang and Song dynasties,manor was one of the important organism of production of ancient society and agricultural economy,and had a profound impact on that periods and later,though it had many different features compared with manor in the European medieval,and also different fromof Han,Tang dynasties.After reviewed and summarized the historic research of academicsof manor and manorial economy in the Tang and Song dynasties,this paper believesthat the main question discussed inthe academics is not doubted about the manor in ancient China,but the differentunderstanding about the of the manor.Based on that,this paperdefines the manor and manor economy and argues that manor and manorial economy is neither a kind of system of ownership form or production relations,nor common cultivated land,but a form of farmland management organization.As an important part of ancient economic society,the manorial economy has had a profound impact on agricultural managementof Tang,Song dynasties and the later periods.This paper investigates the fabric and characteristics of the "Manor" and manorial economyin the literature of Tang and Song dynasties,compares different types and growth trajectory of manor in the different historical periods,discusses therelationships between the manorial economy and the social change,land production and the commodity economy,the manor estate organization and rich society,further reveals the main historical characteristics and significance of the manor in Tang and Song dynasties.The results show that:first,personal attachment of the manor population was abate in the Tang and Song dynasties,however,a large number of rich estate rose;Second,under the impact of the commodity economy,the closed manor estateshad transformed into open ones,and contractual tenancy relationship widely adopted;Third,manor estate organization gradually transformed into a stability force in rural society.In summary,manorial economy in the Tang and Song dynasties was divorced fromthe past closed form,complied with and integrated into the commodity economy,and promoted the ancient economic and social development together with other social and economic factors.
