As one of the three world-famous beverages, tea has a global reputation and an unlimited foreground, especially in healthy drinks. Further more, tea as a cultural carrier has long performed a very important role in Chinese history. This paper mainly wants to describe all kinds of tea cultures in Tang and Song Dynasties, from the methods of drinking tea to the culture of tea, particularly the tea in Buddhist temple, and to reveal how the secular society and the religious group treated this national culture in that time when tea prevailed.This paper counts the changes of the methods of tea drinking and the development of tea culture from the Tang Dynasty to the Song Dynasty, based on the tea specialist—Lu Yu and his masterpiece Tea Classic. And the key point of this paper is the tea ritual in Buddhist temple in Tang and Song Dynasties, binding with the literature works in that time, including poets and notes, the essay attempts to reconstruct the grant tea-drinking issues in that time, and explores how the tea culture, which as the essence of Chinese traditional cultures, develop to its best and influence the civil etiquettes. This paper divided into three parts, the first chapter briefly introduces tea culture in Tang and Song Dynasties, and explores the disputed issue of the death year of Lu Yu with some materials from Buddhist Scriptures. The second part of this essay mainly describes how the tea acted as a sacrifice in the secular society as well as the temple, and discusses the connection between Lu Yu and the Buddhism. The third chapter is the key part of this paper, which describes the tea rituals in the Buddhist society, binding the literature works in the Tang and Song Dynasties, this part wants to explain the etiquette of tea in that time.With widely literature materials, this paper describes the methods of the tea-drinking, the transition and development of tea culture, and the tea rituals in the Buddhist society, even the tea poets from scholars, wants to draw the grant tea-drinking picture, to trace back Chinese tea history, let more people know the broad and profound Chinese traditional culture.
