It seems that Vermeer works in a slow and fastidious method,His works are small in scale but with painstaking design.Most of his paintings depict people in typical Holland interior,As specialist Walter Liedtde pointed out:"Vermeer's work is the scene depicting an ideal woman in an ideal room",With its usual scene but abstruse moral messages,Vermeer's interiors exceed the so-called " Genre Paintings" in more ways than one.Although his extant paintings hardly portray great occasions or events,while the young Vermeer was not directly intended to locate his theme on the Interiors,some of his youthful paintings depict mythological and biblical stories in large dimension.We donnot know exactly who is the teacher of Vermeer,His is obviously not a genius without instructions.In the 1650s,Vermeer's stylistic shift towards great refinement can likewise be explained as a reponse to contemporary artistic developments.Nevertheless,as we cannot simply devide Vermeer's paintings into "Genre Paintings",We cannot totally understand his paintings that convey moral concepts in ways of "Moral Paintings".Vermeer is in a time called Golden Age of Holland,His interiors response to the outdoor changings such as historical revolutions;prosperous economy;as well as scientific discoveries.Besides,plenty of evidences prove that Vermeer is a devoted Catholic,are his paintings in relationship with his religious belief?Vermeer is not an unrecognized artist in poor condition;in contrast,His was elected by his colleagues to be the youngest headmen of the Guild of St Luke.Apart from his painter's identity,Vermeer is an art dealer as well as the father of 11 children,he also helps running a tavern after his parents.All the orther roles in society make influence to his exiguous and small-size paintings.In addition,orther factors contribut to the changes in his paintings such as marriage,patron and moral ideas.It is impossible for any attempt to make an understanding of Vermeer's paintings without consideration of these factors,while the answer of' how to reading his pictures is still open.Besides,Vermeer's artistic characters are in uique enchantment,Composition;Colours;textures are all carefully weighed and refined,those stories about his use of a camera obscura make his work more mysterious.We cannot own Vermeer's artistic characters to the applyment of the optical instruments,whose works seem to be realistic,are definitely not copies of the reality.Vermeer conveys a "real" world of his own after his painstaking constructions and recreations in paintings.
