Architectural Programming Method System For Rural Construction

With demands for China's social and economic development in rural areas,the huge central government funds for rural revitalization efforts and the introduction of a series of rural construction policies and plans,more than 1 billion square meters of new construction areas are completed in the rural every year.Against this backdrop,more and more professional architects from cities dedicate their efforts to the architectural design practice in rural areas,which has dramatically changed the deep-rooted progressive development patterns in rural communiteis,and has brought a new set of problems to the fore: some architects from non-rural areas have little effective cognition of social characteristic mechanism or experience of practice in rural built environment,ignore the differences between urban and rural communities,copy design methods in the city,or use the countryside as the testing ground catering to personal creation preferences.As a result,a large number of buildings with poor functions,improper forms and high cost were constructed,causing damage to the rural environment and the huge waste of resources.The root cause of the above problems lies in the lack of analysis of design conditions in rural context and the lack of scientific basis and effective methods of design.In this study,the theory and method of architectural programming provide ideas and approaches for the above-mentioned problems.Research of architectural programming in China was first introduced from abroad with an aim to address issues on target definition and design basis arising from China's large-scale and rapid urban construction.This study proposes to apply theories and methods of architectural programming to rural construction,build up a systematic framework for architectural programming in rural area according to the characteristics of China's current rural environment and construction projects,and provide architects with a set of scientific and feasible guidelines for rural architectural programming and design.This study firstly defines the characteristic mechanism of rural design projects,and categorizes it into five aspects: project types,functional and spatial characteristics,project participants,organizational characteristics of decision-making and building process,and external environment characteristics of the project.Based on the analysis,reference and adjustment of several existing classical architectural programming method systems,the framework and operation process of architectural programming method system for rural construction are proposed,including the information acquisition and processing of superior,external and internal conditions,programming conceptual process,evaluation and feedback.The information in rural construction includes superior information of planning and project establishment,external information related to objective conditions of the site and environment,and internal information related to the users and operators.The study also puts forward a dedicated programming survey and research method as well as new analysis techniques and tools applicable to rural areas.Steps and methods of programming conceptual process are explained with specific cases from the perspectives of industrial objectives,space concepts,forms and construction modes,as well as operation and implementation strategies.Finally,with four programming and design cases in different types in rural construction,the architectural programming method system proposed in this study is applied and verified.This study expands the range of research objects and application scope of architectural programming theory and method from the city to the rural,systematically builds up the architectural programming framework for rural construction,and provides guidelines and tools for architects to participate in rural construction practice.On the basis of this study,with continued advances of rural construction in China and the deepening of relevant research in the future,new methods,tools,technical means and practical cases will be further added and improved,to sustain and strengthen the architectural practice in rural construction.
