| Mining is not only one of the greatest human activities, but also one that causes intense negative disturbances on the ecological environment. It generates large amounts of waste, causes excavation damage and subsidence, and leads to geological disasters, environment damage, and pollution of abandoned land that can only be reused after restoration and reclamation.Left unused, abandoned mine land(AML)located in cities is a huge waste of urban land, constrains economic development, and creates social and environmental problems. However, due to its distinctive landscape features, restoration and reclamation of abandoned mine lands not only restore damaged ecological environments, but also improve urban land usage efficiency, which releases new space for urban development and provides an opportunity for urban transformation and upgrading. To address problems such as incomplete planning systems, research objects and techniques not being diversified, etc.,this study investigated the restoration and reclamation of abandoned mine land in large-sized cities using literature reviews of urban renewal and abandoned mine land reclamation.Abandoned mine land reclamation design involves urban planning, ecological restoration, urban renewal, etc.,which makes it essential to conduct cross-disciplinary research for a more comprehensive and integrated perspective.Instead of conventional urban planning methods, this study adopted a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach utilizing theoretical results and technical methods such as architecture, urban planning, landscape ecology, urban design, the driving force-state-response(DSR)model,extension theory model, etc.,and introduced the concept of "urban renewal and ecological restoration" by analyzing the essence of abandoned mine land reclamation. This study conducted integrated and systematic research utilizing the universal principle and mechanism underlying abandoned mine land reclamation to focus on different aspects including abandoned mine land reclamation strategy, prioritization evaluation system, and functional replacement decision etc..Following the idea of "urban renewal and ecological restoration," empirical research and showcase design were conducted in the west Being mining area to qualitatively and quantitatively explore cross-disciplinary theories behind abandoned mine land reclamation, which will contribute to sustainable development and "smart"transformational upgrade of the abandoned mine land and the city that it is located in.The details of this study include:(1)Investigating the effect of abandoned mine land on transformation and renewal of large-sized comprehensive cities, and the restoration and reclamation strategies.By analyzing abandoned mine land’s features, types, and current land-use status, this study revealed the urgency of reclaiming abandoned mine land in large-sized comprehensive cities and its significance in promoting urban development and complementing the existing urban planning system.Secondly, the essence of abandoned mine land reclamation and existing problems were analyzed from three aspects-driving forces, influencing factors, and basic modes.Lastly, this study proposed the countermeasure strategy, laying the theoretical foundation for further research on abandoned mine land reclamation from the perspective of "urban renewal and ecological restoration."(2)Exploring the essence and core content of "urban renewal and ecological restoration·" The concept of "urban renewal and ecological restoration" was developed by integrating such ideas into sustainable urban development as "smart growth," land intensive use, ecological urbanism, landscape urbanism,"collage city," and "catalysts theory," etc.The core content of"urban renewal and ecological restoration" was obtained through further discussion of its intension and extension.(3)Establishing an integrated cross-disciplinary approach to research on abandoned mine land reclamation. This study developed the reclamation planning goals, principles, frameworks, and strategies that are "urban renewal and ecological restoration" oriented, explored prioritization evaluation system and functional replacement decision-making evaluation methods, and established the integrated cross-disciplinary theoretical strategic framework of "urban renewal and ecological restoration"oriented reclamation of abandoned mine land by incorporating the "urban renewal and ecological restoration" oriented planning methods and the achieved results of abandoned mine land reclamation. The study also integrated multidisciplinary research results and methods in urban planning, architecture, landscape design, ecology, environmental science,geography,etc.(4)Exploring and optimizing prioritization evaluation system of abandoned mine land reclamation. As an effective means to improve the efficiency and quality of abandoned mine land reclamation,a prioritization evaluation system plays an important role in regeneration planning.Adopting the idea of "urban renewal and ecological restoration," this study focused on the west Being mining area and established a quantitative prioritization evaluation system-based on the driving force-state-response(DSR)model-for abandoned mine land reclamation.Quantification methods were used to quantify indexes, and the four-quadrant method was applied in coupling processing of the evaluation results. The index system provides a more inclusive prioritization evaluation system of reclamation by linking abandoned mine land and urban development.(5)Exploring and optimizing abandoned mine land functional replacement decision evaluation.Under the direction of "urban renewal and ecological restoration,"this study developed a suitability assessment system for replacement sites as residential, recreational parks, offices, and commercial use. This was attained by the results of the prioritization evaluation system of abandoned mine land reclamation and by considering the influencing factors in driving forces and current status when evaluating functional replacements. The correlation function was obtained for each evaluation system by determining classical and joint domains of the evaluation object, and then the weight of every evaluation index was determined by the improved Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP).The extension evaluation model that was established based on the extension theory for abandoned mind land functional replacement can be used in comparing/evaluating proposals and decision making.(6)Applying the above theoretical development in conducting empirical research and case study on abandoned mine land reclamation in the west Being mining area.Based on the theoretical framework discussed above and using both qualitative and quantitative methods, this study conducted SWOT analysis and carried out detailed case analysis and planning, set reclamation goals, and identified strategies for the abandoned mine land in the west Being mining area.Showcase designing and planning were performed for the abandoned mine land in Wangpingzhen as an example. The eventual reclamation and regeneration proposal plan for the abandoned mine land in the west Being mining area will provide insights for the "urban renewal and ecological restoration" oriented development of the west Being mining area. The idea of "urban renewal and ecological restoration" incorporates urban spatial renewal, urban functional completion, and urban cultural heritage into abandoned mine land reclamation to reach a healthy and stable equilibrium with urban human settlements, solving the "urban ecological security" issue, and making it possible to achieve sustainable development and "smart" transformational upgrades. This study provides innovative theoretical basis and scientific guidance for the transformation of abandoned mine land and the city that it is located in.Technical support is also specified for reclamation and regeneration planning of abandoned mine land. |
