The assessment of academic influence has become a very common phenomenon in scientific community,which not only reflects the contributions of scholars,but also plays an important role in award evaluation,fund allocation and employment decisions.In recent years,with the increasing attention to the evaluation of academic influence,it is particularly important to improve the level of the scientific and effective academic evaluation.The reasonable evaluation of academic influence can not only optimize the allocation of research funds,but also select outstanding talents.Considering that there are many indicators which can quantitatively evaluate scientific impact,hence,it is difficult to include all of them in the evaluation process.In addition,the individual researcher tends to have different preferences for different evaluation indicators.How to build a set of scientific and easily accepted indicators is an urgent problem to be solved.Therefore,it is of great theoretical and practical significance to investigate the extent to which researchers use citation-related indicators.Based on the information provided by the scholar's personal homepage,this paper aims to explore the degree of the use of citation-based indicators among scholars and its related influencing factors.This study contains six chapters.Listing the contents as follows:Chapter 1 introduces the research background and significance of this paper,then depicts the routes and method of this paper,and finally expounds the innovation of this study.Chapter 2 reviews the important theories and methods related to this research.Firstly,it introduces two basic theories of citation behavior and the types of citation motivations.Secondly,it systematically introduces citation-based indices and their applications in academic evaluation.Finally,this study also describes the method of citation analysis and commonly used citation databases.Chapter 3 conceptualizes the behavior to which researchers provide citation-related information on their personal homepages,and names it as citation personal display,and systematically examines whether there are researcher differences in citation personal display.Based on researchers'personal websites on the subjects of chemistry,mathematics and physics in 39 American universities,the citation analysis method was used to compare and analyze the differences in citation personal display at the level of university,academic rank,discipline,and country,revealing the degree of difference at each level.Meanwhile,the possible reasons for the differences are discussed.Chapter 4 mainly studies the differences in H-index personal display.Based on the sample in Chapter 3,from the level of university,academic rank,discipline and country,the differences in H-index personal display are discussed.Then,the extent of H-index personal display is also compared to the degree of citation personal display,which hints that researchers have different attitudes to H-index and citations.Chapter 5 explores the factors which have influences on citation personal display.Based on the information extracted from the Scopus database and the scholar's personal homepage,this paper uses the binomial logistic regression model to study whether these factors have the influence on citation personal display at the level of discipline,and reveals the different roles of each influence factor in different disciplines.Then,based on influencing directions of these factors,this chapter discusses the possible management implications.Chapter 6 summarizes the research contents and contributions of this paper,points out the shortcomings of this research,and looks forward to the possible research directions in the future.The innovations of this study are as follows:this paper not only discusses the status quo of citation personal display for the first time,but also conceptualizes the behavior of scholars providing citation-related information on the personal homepage,which enrich the development of relevant theory of citation analysis;By comparing and analyzing the differences of scholars in citation personal display and H-index personal display,this paper reveals their disciplinary characteristics and provides a basis for administrative organization in selecting evaluation indicators in different disciplines;Finally,this paper finds that citation indicators paly different roles in different disciplines by studying the influencing factors of citation personal display.For example,in the subject of chemistry,the average number of citations has the greatest impact on the citation personal display;for mathematics,H-index does;for physics,total number of citations does.The findings provide important reference for the applicability of evaluation indicators in different disciplines,for example,we can focus on the average number of citations when evaluating the scientific impact of chemistry researchers.
