From Essential Attribute To Boundary Condition Of Embodied Cognition:Disenchantment And Re-establish

Why to say disenchantment,and how to re-establish?The overgeneralization result in disenchantment.Embodied cognition,derived from the philosophy of mind,has received wide attention,becoming one of the core issues of the second generation of cognitive science.However,the interpretation and application of embodied cognition in the psychology community,at home and abroad,all have a tendency of overgeneralization,which breaks through its proper boundaries and forms an embodied illusion.Reviewing its history and development,even though the embodiment of cognition has become a consensus,but the level to which embodied cognition is understood in the academic world isn't so profound as the manifestation of overgeneralization.It is not clear why cognition can be embodied,how or to what extent does cognition can be embodied.That can be to say,it is not enough to support the overgeneralization of embodied cognition,that the degree of understanding the essential attributes and boundary conditions of embodied cognition.Thus,the question about essential attribute and boundary condition are introduced.That is to say re-establish,by introspecting the nature of body.Using the essential attributes of embodied cognition to discern its boundary conditions,and go further,using those boundary conditions to deepen our understanding about essential attributes.It will promote the better understanding of embodied cognition,better handle the relationship between embodied and disembodied,and better grasp the nature of cognition.As a result,this will be propitious to reposition embodied cognition and establish a new research position and academic attitude.Firstly,it must introspect the physical attributes,in order to examine the essential attributes and characteristics of embodied cognition,and then consider the boundary conditions for the occurrence of embodied effects.In the first place,the body is physics,followed by the lifelong development,and then,that is influenced by the culture and tend to individual.So that:(1)The physical attribute dimension.A specific body that can sense and act,is the basic premise of embodied cognition.The physical body presets the range of variation of embodied cognition,which can be regarded as the foundation or initial condition of generating embodied cognition.(2)The lifelong development dimension.From childhood tend to enhance embodiment dominantly by the experience of perception and action,to the gradual stabilizing of the youth,and further to the old tend to weaken embodiment dominantly by the experience of visual,the embodied cognition shows a certain age characteristics and lifelong development rules.This means,that the occurrence of embodied cognition has the limitation of age and development level,and it needs to the matching of perceptual information quality and cognitive tasks.(3)The cultural dimension.Cultural drives,such as intrinsic customs,values,shape perception and action,body views,and body representations.This promote embodiment to occur and develop in a manner consistent with cultural expectation.However,changes in cultural patterns,such as cultural mashups and digital culture,directly change individual cultural experience,which will promote multicultural models of embodied cognition and virtual embodiment.(4)The individual dimension.Individualized perceptual-action habits and body-specific sensitivity contribute to,and also limit,the individual's style and level of embodied cognition,promoting the individual to show a habitual modal of embodied cognition.To sum up,embodied cognition is body-specific,age-specific,culturalspecific,and individualized.Whether or not cognition is embodied,in what way and to what extent it is embodied,all of that is restrictive by multilateral boundary conditions.This multilateral boundary condition is not only the boundary condition of embodied and disembodied,but also the boundary condition of a specific modal of embodied.Secondly,based on the boundary conditions,it is necessary to ask the basic cognitive problems that the theory of embodied cognition must face,in the pre-theoretical perspective: the generalization-problem,flexibility-problem and abstractness-problem.The boundary condition means that the embodied cognition is not inevitable,which directly challenges the explanatory power and scope of the embodied cognition theory.Therefore,it is necessary to select some basic cognitive problems,that all cognitive theories need to solve,in order to question the effective interpretation scope of embodied cognition,and further clarify the boundaries and attributes of the embodied knowledge,or embodied cognition.The requirements of generalization,flexibility,and abstraction of cognition,make it necessary for individual to identify and judge the deep structure of concepts,and they must combine multiple modal-specific representation to form semantic memories and semantic representation.This implies a possibility of central-semantic representation system,a possibility of multiple representations,and a possibility of symbiosis between embodied and disembodied.This directly challenged the corresponding embodied effect.Although there is a symbiotic relationship between multiple boundary conditions,between embodied and disembodied,it does not mean to integrate one.A suitable and feasible research position and academic attitude,should be to keep opposite and to strive for mutual interpretation.We should study the boundary conditions as the hard core of theoretical study.It is not only maintaining their respective theoretical qualities,but also breaking down the theoretical barriers to realize knowledge reciprocity,so as to enhance theoretical vitality,theoretical creativity,and realistic explanatory power.
