Modern Chinese and Myanmar have their own grammatical systems.As they belong to the same language family,there are a lot of same characteristics.At the same time,as they are the different languages of different nationalities,there are different characteristics too.The aim of the study is by contrasting the grammatical systems of Modern Chinese and Myanmar to understand their differences and special characteristics more specifically and to predict the difficulties in teaching and learning Chinese grammar,thereby assist in effective teaching of Chinese grammar and language.On the other hand,this study also could help Myanmar students who study Chinese and Chinese students who study Myanmar understand the characteristics and the differences of Chinese and Myanmar Grammar well,thereby reducing the errors and able to use Chinese and Myanmar correctly.This study used the contrastive analytical method,referring Chinese Grammar as a basic guide line,compared and contrasted the grammatical systems of Modern Chinese and Myanmar,described the similarities and the differences between these two grammatical systems.On the basis of above findings,we predicted the problems and designed the appropriate unseen questions for Myanmar learners.After that,we analyzed the grammatical mistakes of 50 B.A 4th year Chinese major students studying at YUFL.There are altogether twelve chapters in the dissertation including conclusion.The first chapter includes aims and value of the study,literature review,theory applied in the research,research method,the source of the data and the scope of the study.From chapter two to chapter ten compares and contrasts nine basic parts of speech of Modern Chinese and Myanmar,especially discusses the similarities and the differences between their definition,categories and functions.Chapter eleven compares and contrasts the sentence elements and their orders,basic types of sentences of Modern Chinese and Myanmar.Each chapter also includes the related error analysis and advices.Chapter twelve points out the typological,morphological and sociocultural characteristics reflected by grammatical components of modern Chinese and Myanmar,and then on the basis of the data,categorizes the problems to be solved in teaching Chinese grammar to Myanmar students and also points out the causes of the errors.Finally,we conclude the findings and also give the suggestions related to teaching Chinese grammar to Myanmar students.The conclusion of the study is as follow.(1)Modern Chinese lacks of morphological change.Myanmar grammatical components have the morphological markers to a certain extent.(2)Personal pronouns,interjections and modal particles of Chinese and Myanmar could reflect the sociocultural background of Chinese and Myanmar society.(3)Chinese grammatical system mainly uses multi-factors such as semantic and functional standards in categorizing the parts of speech.Myanmar grammatical system uses the single standard only.(4)The different points between two grammatical systems are greater than the similar points.(5)The error rate of the grammatical items that are similar in general but different in detail predominate.(6)More specifically,the percentage of grammatical mistakes of the order of the complement,the object and the particle is the highest.The second highest is that of the adverb of modality and the third highest is that of the modal particle.(7)Negative transfer of mother language and insufficient knowledge of the second language are the two main factors causing the above errors.We would like to suggest that we should use contrastive method appropriately in teaching Chinese grammar to Myanmar students to make teaching more effective.Furthermore,it is necessary to make the supplementary explanations of parts of speech and their overlapped phenomenon,the synonyms,the functions,usages and the exceptions of the new words.Teaching grammar should not be limited to syntax only,it is also necessary to introduce integrated teaching of syntax,semantics,pragmatics and translation together.For the time being,in the field of teaching Chinese grammar,it is necessary to write the specific grammar text-books for Myanmar students.This contrastive study is related to syntax,contrastive linguistics and Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language,and is also the preliminary exploration in the research fields of China and Myanmar.This dissertation could be used as a reference in teaching Chinese grammar to Myanmar students and could also be helpful in teaching Myanmar Grammar to Chinese students.
