Cultural Confrontation & Cultural Alienation & Cultural Evolution | Posted on:2018-09-10 | Degree:Doctor | Type:Dissertation | Country:China | Candidate:Y Z Gu | Full Text:PDF | GTID:1315330542961539 | Subject:Media and cultural industries | Abstract/Summary: | PDF Full Text Request | The main purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate such a topic that the youth subculture will be able to get rid of the traditional behavior as resistance through ritual,develop three kind of new model as cultural confrontation,cultural alienation and cultural evolution on fighting against the main culture by the aid of Internet new media technology.For a rather long period,the youth group could only construct the features of their own culture in the practical society where the elder generation controls overall resources.This forces the youth subculture to remain in the feeble and vulnerable state and accordingly,the young generation could only respond with the so-called “ritual resistance”that advocated by the Birmingham school.When Internet,which is treated as the collector of human media instrument,successfully opens the distinctive network culture space independent from that in the practical society for the youth group based on the full exertion of its disenchanted and communicative functions,this space is ruled by technical principles.At the same time,the youth group exactly has advantages over such network technology,which promotes the construction of subculture and the transition of practice space from practical society to Internet.In addition,based on the “information freedom” and “finance freedom” quickly obtained from the Internet space,the independence of youth subculture is enhanced to a large extent.The important result brought about by such transition is that original “ritual resistance” correlation between network youth subculture and mainstream culture turns to the more meaningful state: “cultural confrontation”,“cultural alienation” and “cultural evolution”This thesis has made multiple case analyses on representative network youth subculture states and observes the three new-type cultural confrontation methods in the main body,concluding that the three cultural confrontation methods are not independent from one another but actually internally connected.To be specific,there exists the remotest connection between “cultural alienation” and mainstream culture,wherein the former could continually generate the “subculture capital” different from that of the latter.There indeed exists the most intimate relationship between “cultural evolution” and mainstream culture,wherein the utility of the former is to transform “subculture capital” into “subculture industry”.On the one hand,it changes the appearance of mainstream culture from the input of subculture value concepts On the other hand,it intensifies the economic basis of subculture by way of industrial earnings.The correlation between “cultural confrontation” and mainstream culture is in the middle of the above-mentioned two types wherein the function of the former is to prevent the latter from conducting compulsory “incorporation” activities on network youth subculture through the persistent network technical advantages,thus guaranteeing the normal operation of “cultural alienation” and “cultural evolution”.The research of this thesis expresses that the new media represented by Internet has obviously intensified the independence of Chinese youth subculture through the mighty technical power.The variation of the status of subculture allows the colorful practice activities to walk out from the desolate and nonessential marginalized status but develop into the non-negligible challenges and combat power in mainstream culture under advantageous conditions such as group growth,communication convenience and financial freedom.While this process filled with challenges and combats will finally lead to the transition of “digitalized civilization” from challenger to ruler in the future accompanied following with the constant incorporation of mainstream culture against youth subculture concepts. | Keywords/Search Tags: | Internet, New Media, Youth Subculture, Resistance through Rituals, Cultural Confrontation, Cultural Alienation, Cultural Evolution, Subcultural Capital, Subcultural Industry | PDF Full Text Request | Related items |
