Research On Liang Shiqiu's "Literary Discipline" From The Perspective Of Public Life

“Literary discipline” is the core proposition of Liang Shiqiu's literary thought.It highly condenses and summarizes Liang Shiqiu's classical literary thought.Grasping and studying "literary discipline",we can thoroughly understand the inner logic of Liang Shiqiu's literary thought.As for the current research situation of Liang Shiqiu's literary thought in the mainland of China,the Taiwan area of China,and overseas,it has made a lot of abundant achievements in the academic research.However,it has paid less attention to Liang Shiqiu's public intellectual identity,and with which to study the fundamental purpose of establishing the system of literary theory.It has seldom chosen a broader perspective to study,and has been also less associated with contemporary literary theory,which shows the significance and value of Liang Shiqiu's literary thought today.The study of Liang Shiqiu's literary thought from the perspective of re-incorporating literature into public life,is mainly inspired by “Poetic Justice: The Literary Imagination and Public Life” of Martha C.Nussbaum.“Poetic justice” mainly refers to a kind of justice norms based on literary imagination and emotion,and tries to find a more humane and more reliable judicial justice and judgment standard through literary imagination and emotion.It provides a perspective about re-incorporating literature into public life for literary study,with which we can explore the social function of literature in the public life by aesthetic attributes.Liang Shiqiu who actively involves in public life is a public intellectual,and his literary thought is closely related to public life.These provide the feasibility for this paper to study Liang Shiqiu's literary thought from the perspective of re-incorporating literature into public life.Using this perspective and the methods of interdisciplinary research,keyword research and comparative research,the deep purpose,significance and modern theoretical value of Liang Shiqiu's literary thought taking “literary discipline” as the core proposition can be effectively explored.First of all,“literary discipline” based on the standpoint of classical literature,includes the "disciplined" content and the "disciplined" form,and the "disciplined" form serves for the "disciplined" content.According to the specific content of the "disciplined" content,“literary discipline” takes ethical attitude,healthy universal human nature,rational restriction of imagination and emotion as the specific meaning of "discipline",and takes classicism,ethics,human nature and reason as the keywords.Using these keywords with special connotation as the breakthrough point,this paper deeply analyzes Liang Shiqiu's literary thought taking “literary discipline” as the core proposition,and points out that the essence of it is rationality,moderation and balance.Secondly,Liang Shiqiu is not only a famous essayist,literary theorist and translator,but also a public intellectual who is actively involved in public life in the first half of the 20 th century,which is seldom noticed by the current academic circles.His view of literature is closely related to public life.From the perspective of re-incorporating literature into public life,the establishment of Liang Shiqiu's literary thought,is not only to set up a system of literary theory which can contribute to the development of the history of modern Chinese literature and literary theory,and is not just to promote the healthy human nature and ethics,but is mainly to promote new humanism thought with the essence of rationality,moderation and balance in public life by the way of “literary discipline” at that time.In the severe situation of new humanism thought which is deviating from May4 th New Culture and Ideas and rejected by the new culture camp,Liang Shiqiu draws the lessons of Xueheng School's failure of direct introduction of new humanism thought,and adopts the indirect way of establishing literary thought to advocate new humanism in public life.Thirdly,showing Liang Shiqiu's literary thought are his five symposia of literary criticism,their main content are the introduction of Babbitt's literary thought,the reflection of May4 th literature,the criticism of revolutionary literature.From the perspective of re-incorporating literature into public life,this paper points out that Liang Shiqiu's “literary discipline” has substantially criticized the romantic ideas that Babbitt criticizes and hides behind May4 th literature and revolutionary literature through the way of literature.The romanticism that criticized by Liang Shiqiu here is mainly based on the definition of Babbitt's emotional romanticism,is a kind of radicalism which lacks rational control and esteems emotional supremacy.Specifically,the significance of Liang Shiqiu's literary thought and promoting new humanism is to attack the radical ideas of romanticism that spread in Chinese society at that time,and it takes orders from emotional impulse but lacks rational control.Finally,from the perspective of re-incorporating literature into public life,this paper makes a comparative study of “literary discipline” and “poetic justice”,discusses the theoretical supplement of “literary discipline” to “poetic justice” and “aesthetic justice”,and through them demonstrates the theoretical value and vitality of “literary discipline” today.However,Liang Shiqiu's literary thought taking “literary discipline” as the core proposition,Liang Shiqiu's reflection on May4 th literature and his understanding of romanticism are limited.
