| This paper intends to explore the sociality of fabric in addition to its practical function,and reveals the special significance of fabric as well as observing its role in the context of contemporary art.It is also my intention to change the traditional view towards the fabric and turn it into a deeper transformation perspective for the relations of fabric,art and society.This transformation perspective corresponds to the paper’s title “the evolution of fabric”.Therefore,the association of fabric and society almost set the keynote for the whole paper.While how fabric get involved in contemporary art and become an art media to reflect the society? This question should be the main clues run through the paper.Chapter one,which discusses the decoration of fabric,is mainly about the boundaries between the traditional fabric craft and the fine art.It also tends to find out how the fabric was classified as craft and its image in the mind of people.Chapter two,following the former discussion,explores the sociality of fabric.The social transformation in the 20 th century which is reflected by Nylon Stockings and Jeans has related to social problems behind the decoration of fabric.In the whole article,the decoration of fabric and the sociality of fabric constituted the basis of its involving in the contemporary art.Chapter three,Beyond the Tradition: Fabric and Avant-garde Art,as the turning point in the development of the paper,investigates the related art trend and approach of fabric to step in contemporary art.It discussed respectively from three aspects: Marcel Duchamp ’s rebellious thoughts,the artistic phenomena resulted from "art is life" and the weaving art language.As the main part of my paper,chapter four examines the meaning of "the fabric evolution".It introduces the special artistic language of fabric in the multi-cultural and multi-values context of contemporary art and take the relationship of fabric characteristics,social background and the artist concept into consideration.The content of this chapter includes the feminist artists and "femininity" art,thehistorical metaphor of traditional fabric,and the new interpretation of fabric graphic pattern,new fabric and consciousness in future.These four parts present together an important point of this paper: how fabric,as the media of contemporary art,connected the information,technology and consciousness of society.The epilogue of this paper asks for the future of fabric,based on former research,from two angles of its role in science and technology and in art media. |
