"Body" is an old and new topic.From the 20 th Century to this day,"body" has become the focus of attention in the field of western humanities and social sciences.The history of western visual art is full of the power of self-innovation and brilliant interpretation from the last century.With the continuous change and emergence of artistic value,the constantly enrich and update of the artistic expression,penetration and enlightenment of ideology and culture,social life,science and technology progress and other external forces,"body" increasingly highlight its independent value,deriving its semantic unknown dimension and hitherto.The purport of this thesis is regard "body" as the core,with the interdisciplinary perspective of motivation,thinking the motivation of deconstruction in traditional art field of "body",combing the gradually extended context of "body" in the new art and culture;discussing on the unique form and attribute of "body" in the twentieth century of western visual art;interpretation on interaction of the relevant theory and practice.The main body of the thesis is divided into five chapters:The first chapter mainly traces the reasons and the process of "body" in the visual arts in the last century.In terms of the theme and function of expression,the body in the traditional art can be summarized as "the body of myth","the body of God","man","gender" and "secular".The process of "body" and "human being" is also the process of awakening of the human.As the object of aesthetic appreciation,the “body” was once trapped in the gradually solidified aesthetic standards and forms.After experiencing he ups and downs of the artistic form and the cultural revolution in twentieth Century,the declaration of "art for art" soon became obsolete,"art" and "art" is redefined,new media period has coming,the growing exhaustion of the "body" is activated."Body" ushered in a new "Enlightenment"".In the second chapter,under the influence of the contemporary social culture and the development of science and technology,the "materialized" state of "production" in the visual art is presented.Under the background of the age of machine reproduction and the background of the image,the "body" in the art as the creation of the social evolution,presented a scene of indifference and alienation.The boundaries of daily life and art are gradually eliminated,and the physical nature of the "body" can be consumed.In the microscopic world of the "body",the artist dramatically reflects the alienation of the contemporary society and revealed the fragility,struggle and anxiety of the macro social body.The third chapter focuses on the “body” in “space”,discussing the relationship between the "space" and "body".From this perspective,"body" in the visual art from the 20 th Century to this day is divided into three spatial dimensions or three kinds of body image,which is namely "being confined body","social Theatre" in the body,as well as the "human body measurement".By the interpretation of the works and its thinking in the change,the relevance of the situation,existence,as ways to realize the new standard and new source involved in larger space construction.The fourth chapter discusses the most unique attribute of "body" in western visual art of this periodis,is the "media character".The generalized "behavior art" and "new media art" is the most obvious way to reflect the physical properties of the two categories of "media" and its "new" art form,publicity,performance,experience,technology and scalability.They are typical of the close fit with the times.From the angle of "media" of "body" into consideration,it can also be reflected in the process of combination of art and technology in a general way,the body's own "media".The fifth chapter examines in the new cultural landscape in western society,female artists in the "body" and the awakening of confession.Practice in writing digital representative female artist for reference,through the works to convey the "body",observing how the "body" resist being masked,being watched,being disciplined and materialized fate,which gradually becoming the existence of beyond the gender.In the conclusion part,the thesis introspect the connotation and denotation,expression way,the concept of overflow,the media orientation,the social significance and other issue of the "body" in the twentieth century western visual art.
