Relationship Between Character And Painting Style Of Chinese Painters

The formation of painting style is one of the maturity symbols of painting art by painters.Character as an important factor affecting the formation of the painting style has potentially psychological effect on painting style.Paintings without self-character have no vitality and eventually will be eliminated and even forgotten by history.Most of the famous ancient Chinese painters paid great attention on expressing self-character.Therefore,they succeeded in creating unusual and distinctive painting styles which are still focused by later generations after long-term development.On the basis of researching historical materials about characters and painting styles of ancient painters and referring to theoretical research achievement about character and painting style of predecessors,this paper uses example illustration,analysis,reductive summing-up and other methods to analyze the relationship between painters' character and their painting style and prove the effect of characters of ancient painters upon formation of their painting style and character factors implied in painting style.Chapter I first illustrates the background to choose this topic,the significance of the topic,the current status of research and the research methods and innovations of this paper.Chapter II outlines the concept of character,style and painting style and the significance of painting style on success of painters,and highlights the importance of character factors in influencing formation of individual style.Chapters III and Chapter IV are the focus of this paper.Chapter III analyzes how the character factors influence the painters' painting style.Chapter IV analyses character potentials during the three processes of painting,i.e.“to experience life”,“to brew feeling” and “to show in paintings” and states that character affects the painters' selection in the process of experiencing life,character controls painters' thinking in the process of brewing sentiment,and character affects the aesthetic behaviors of painters in the process of painting performance.Chapter V analyzes the discrepancy between painting style and character and explains that multiplicity of character and potential exposure of character are main reasons causing inconsistency between external character and real style.Chapter VI draws a conclusion that there is a unity between character and painting style,there is a shaping flexibility between characterand painting style,character can produce a potential psychological effect upon formation of painting style,and the conceal phenomenon of character's multiplicity is consistent with potential character of self-identity.Finally enlightenment for contemporary painters is gained: in this galaxy of talents where Chinese painting talents emerge,talents should not follow the trend blindly.They should fully exploit the advantages of their self-character in painting creation,so that they can form a painting style with their own unique individuality.
