“The modern stage narrative mode of the Chinese traditional opera”,differing from the traditional as well as the classical mode,and at the same time inheriting their core spirit,is a result from screening,choosing and effective integrating of various art resources through“vertical inheritance”and“horizontal reference”on the basis of understanding and adapting to the aesthetic needs of modern audience.It keeps up with time and owns the stronger and more comprehensive artistic expression in addition to a creative team that ensures integral artistic requirements of stage performance.The exploration and construction of “the modern stage narrative mode of the Chinese traditional opera” is made a historical necessity by the variety of subjects,the evolution of text system,the transformations of stage form,and the changing aesthetic orientation of the audience.When history and times makes the demand on the Chinese traditional opera,they also create and offer the possibility for it:firstly,the Chinese traditional opera has been liable to continuous development and changes with times;secondly,two opening-up policies provide it the theoretical references;thirdly,technology development brings about the physical preparation;finally,the concern and support of New China government give it political security and external support.The important task of the exploding and constructing on “the modern stage narrative mode of the Chinese traditional opera” falls on directors because of the directors' inborn capacity,the historical experience and the formation process of the related concepts.Therefore,this thesis focuses on the discussion of the so-called “The exploration and construction of direction on the modern stage narrative mode of the Chinese traditional opera”.The director of the Chinese traditional opera and the director of drama,who originally belong to different aesthetic systems,follow different aesthetic principles,have different ways of creative thinking,use different methods and pursue different aesthetic effects,now become one common subject of “the exploration and construction on the modern stage narrative mode of the Chinese traditional opera” due to various reasons,such as the subjective and the objective,the outside and the inside,the internal and the social reasons.The three historical periods that“the exploration and construction of direction on the modern stage narrative mode of the Chinese traditional opera”has gone through are: the initiative attempt of “bringing forth the new through the old” of Yan'an period(the 30 s and 40 s of the last century),the“comprehensive exploration” of the Reform and Opening up(the 80 s and 90 s of the last century),the “integrated regression” of the new century.It now has presented different creative styles of different times with distinctive features,and has revealed different problems.From the exploration and construction of the above three periods over one hundred years,this thesis summarizes the following three categories of creative experiences: “inheriting the traditional spirit and developing the modern character”,“focusing on text creation and overall planning stage presentation”,“seizing ‘competition' and grasping the ‘market'”.Every coin has two sides.This study on“the exploration and construction of direction on the modern stage narrative mode of the Chinese traditional opera” also has its positives and negatives.This thesis holds that because “the modern stage narrative mode of the Chinese traditional opera” has its artistic characteristics of keeping pace with the times and opening and inclusive,the exploration and construction of it is still on the road.Meanwhile,this exploration and construction will always be caught in the dilemma and dispute caused by the interactions and inter-restraints of “inheriting tradition” and “looking for innovation”.In any event,the audience will always be the most important acceptance standard of the exploration and construction.
