On The Application Of Ideasthesia In Architecture-the Proposal And Construction Of A Creative Thinking Behind The Innovation In Architecture

This dissertation does a research on applying creative thinking in architectural innovation.The "Ideasthesia" in the title is neither an obscure esoteric theoretical speculation nor the mystical metaphysics of architects.It is creative thinking based on the internal connection of everything.The basic premise of this thesis originates from the two adverse trends in modern Chinese architecture-an extreme pursuit on architectural autonomy and a shallow expression of architectural formation.It explores further previous scholars' research results,takes into consideration of the rules of architecture itself and establishes a framework of the architectural ideasthesia routed on the concept generalization.Synaesthesia,among the five senses,is generally acknowledged as an independent rhetoric that use a phase originally representing one sense to express another.By analyzing systematically the concept of ideasthesia,the paper emphasizes the idea of "Beyond Sense"and "Beyond Rhetoric".It well defines ideasthesia,which helps to clarify the ambiguity and misunderstanding.Multiple-level research is carried out on the internal structure of ideasthesia from a few aspects,the nature of ideasthesia,relationship between ideasthesia and logic thinking&image thinking;physiological basis of ideasthesia;differences between ideasthesia and other relevant concepts.It discusses the philosophic foundation from different perspectives of eastern and western cultural backgrounds,and points out the intercultural significance of ideasthesia.Besides,it expounds its characteristics such as heterogeneity,abnormal moral compliance,intuition,ignitionability and accumulation.At the same time,specific explanations are given to the psychological process of ideassthesia in art creation and their "intermediate" structure,as well as aesthetic pursuit.And these all lays a sound theoretical foundation for the research.Starting with a case study,the research describes the building of Zhejiang Art Museum.It includes a statement of Mr.Cheng Taining's to redefine ideasthesia from two levels-epistemology and methodology.By re-interpreting the concept of "speech,concept and meaning" of a building,the paper integrates the "generation" theory of biology to completely interpret the key question of "generation of architectural conception".It illustrates that ideasthesia intervenes in architectural creation via architectural conception generation.In the meantime,it points out that the ideasthesia-based architectural aesthetics does not just stay on the level of "appearance completion",but also imply a pursuit for architecturally conceptual situation,thereby determines the technical route of ideasthesia-based architectural creation.After that,the research clarifies the significance of the innovation in architecture:a complementation for ways of architectural innovation;improving of architectural performance;deepening of dimensions of architectural aesthetics;breakthrough of architecture ' s concept of time and space,etc.It seems to most people that applying ideasthesia into architecutre is just like a black hole.To clear up the misunderstanding,this paper attempts to discuss the mechanism of ideasthesia,study the process of creation of artifacts in ancient China,the autonomy and heteronomy in architecture as well as their mutual relationship.Furthermore,it points out that the generation of ideasthesia-based architectural conception is a process of the mutual unity and gradual integration of image thinking and logic thinking,and of autonomy and heteronomy in architecture.Based on this,four steps of ideasthesia-based architectural conception generation are put forward:the acquisition of architectural ideasthesia;extraction and recombination of ideasthesia-based architectural conceptions;implemented expression of ideasthesia-based architectural conception and destination of ideasthesia-based architectural aesthetics.Then,efforts are made to analyze the creation process of Le Corbusier's famous masterpiece-Notre Dame du Haut.The creative mechanism of ideasthesia-based architecture is more directly displayed.This research opposes metaphysics.Only when architectural ideasthesia is transformed into visible and touchable architecture,can it be meaningful for architecture.For this reason,it proposes several strategies for creation of architectural form;architectural space;and architectural environment.They are abstract reversal strategy;narrative and organizational strategy;scenario creation strategy of architectural ideasthesia,and ideasthesia application.This research is completed under a general background that China' s construction market continues to develop increasingly and embraces huge construction size whereas it lacks innovation.According to this dissertation,ideasthesia,originating from China ' s traditional holistic philosophy,is of special significance to Chinese architects.It is extremely helpful to establishing theories and methods of China' s modern architectural innovation and creating modern architectural works with Chinese characteristics.Ideasthesia fundamentally changes the way of thinking in architecture and its innovation.It also breaks through the existing external rules to enable architectural creation to get through the Chinese and foreign,the ancient and modern.Meanwhile,barriers between architecture and other things can be removed.Ideasthesia can be obtained from different things to diversify the innovation of architecure.In this way,the study provides new thinking,new perspectives and new ways for creating more original and plentiful artistic architectural works.The accumulation feature of ideasthesia itself decides that ideasthesia could be developed by training.What matters is how to handle the relationship between "knowing various arts" and "specializing in one kind of art",which will generate active impact on China' s architectural education and development of Chinese architects ' quality.Ideasthesia does not only belong to the past,but also the future.With time passing by and technology advanced,ideasthesia will not disappear.Instead,it will be combined with the latest science and technology to continue providing a steady stream of forward momentum for architectural innovation.
