Maritime accidents such as ship collision, grounding and so on frequently occur as the facts that ships are developing towards large-scale and high-speed increasingly. Developing the intelligent decision making support system for collision avoidance based on the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) can greatly decrease the possibility of the maritime incidence which can also improve the research level and percentage of home-made parts of independent property fights of the IBS. On the base of the personifying intelligent decision-making for collision avoidance (PIDVCA), through analysis of the deficiency in the original method, the solution of optimized method and model is put forward which can further extend the deepness and scope of ship intelligent decision making for collision avoidance theory.The main work of the paper lies in:(1) A series of theoretical improvement and optimization work is done on the personifying intelligent decision making for vessel collision avoidance method, which includes the integrity reasoning of the target encounter characteristic identification algorithm, ship collision avoidance danger assessment modeling and its optimization, the optimization of ship safe distance assessment model, the integrity reasoning and completeness proof of the ship's time prediction of recovering course model and the optimization of latest time to use rudder to give way to the ship under the special encountering characteristic. Isolated obstacles and dynamic ships can be alone or at the same time be avoided based on the intelligent collision avoidance decision making automation method. By the simulation test, it shows that this method is applicable.(2) A model is put forward to dynamically assess the risk of collision and the level of danger, which can much more scientifically appraise the difficult level of collision avoidance by intelligent judging algorithm as a whole. To guarantee the method which can reach the expected implementation effect, decision making co-coordinator and notification automation method is initially put forward.(3) Sixteen machine rules (machine rules for two ships and more ships encountering situation under intelligent collision avoidance decision making automation method) is formed according to the characteristic of the personifying intelligent decision making for vessel collision avoidance method corresponding to the COLREGs.The detailed theoretical analysis and cases study are given to make sure the acceptability and availability for the navigator at sea.(4) The testing scheme for ship navigation automation algorithm and key modeling completeness of ship intelligent decision making automation for collision avoidance is put forward. An approximate sea trial environment virtual simulation platform is constructed to validate the ship navigation automation key algorithm at open sea. Under this platform, systematic testing work such as ship course control, ship track control and ship collision avoidance is done. Particularly, automatic collision avoidance algorithm testing work between two vessels and multi-vessels is executed on this platform and the testing results show that the intelligent decision making automation for vessel collision avoidance method has already reached the level of real project application at its reliability and accuracy.(5) A series of research on the intelligent decision making automation for vessel collision avoidance method for practical auxiliary decision making on real ship and maritime simulator is done. Firstly, to put the method into the real project application, ship intelligent collision avoidance decision making support function designing scheme is given which includes ship danger level sortation, collision avoidance key ship implication and the UI design for automatic ship trial. Secondly, according to the deficiency existing at current maritime simulator, an idea of construction of intelligent maritime simulator which realizes the intelligence of the target and own ship is given.Deep research is done on the key technology of the ship collision avoidance automation at open sea which supports foundmental base for the development of the decision making support system of ship collision avoidance and take an important step for the ship navigation automatiton.
