With the rapid development of modern radio systems, the demand of research onantenna systems with excellent performance simutaneously, such as low profile,compact size, light weight, low cost,multifunction, ease of fabrication and integrationwith other devices etc, has been urgently raised. The new situation does bring newopportunities and challenges for the field of Antenna Engineering, which alsoobjectively requires that antenna world introduces some new design concepts andtechnologies.Both substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology and Metamaterial arethe emerging research fronts in the electromagnetic field. In this thesis, the basictheories of SIW and Metamaterial, and also with the corresponding antennatechonologies are discussed. Then the design and application of high performance SIWslot antenna array, unequally spaced slot antenna array based on compositeright/left-handed (CRLH) waveguide, zero-index radome, high impedance transmissionline are proposed, respectively. The outlines and conclusions of this dissertation aresummarized as follows:1. Design and optimization of large-scale SIW slot atenna arrayThe problems of narrow bandwidth, low production yield and long design cyclesare generally encountered in the design of large-scale, high gain, narrow beam, lowsidelobe level (SLL) SIW slot array. Sometimes it would be difficult or impossible toimplement at high frequencies. To solve these problems, efficient design andoptimization methods of SIW broadside longitudinal slot antenna array are introduced,which are based on modified Elliott equations and comprehensive utilization of Hfss,CST and MATLAB. Meanwhile, design of sparse arrays is proposed and investigated.This design method could lead to easy deisgn, enhanced bandwidth and lowerrequirement for fabrication accuracy, while preserving acceptable radiation properties.2. Design of small high-perormance SIW slot atenna arrayDesign of a compact SIW slot antenna array with desired radiation pattern of lowerside-and back-lobe is a big challenge. In this paper, a compact substrate integratedwaveguide (SIW) slot antenna array with a planar choke is proposed for low back-loberadiation by suppressing the diffraction at the edges of the substrate. 3. Design of compact high-perormance automotive radar atenna using SIWConsidering that24GHz automotive radar antenna has the the characteristics ofhigh gain, narrow beam, low SLL, high frequency and compact structure, a feednetwork by way of two vertical feed through pins and a sparse array have been adopted.To further improve the directivity of slots or/and reduce external coupling between them,a slotted sidewall or zero refractive index random are introduced. Finally, theestablished design goals are achieved.4. Studies of unequally spaced slot antenna arrays based on CRLH waveguideBased on the infinite wavelength propagation property of CRLH waveguide,unequally spaced resonant slotted-waveguide antenna arrays are proposed. The infinitewavelength propagation property ensures slots anywhere can achieve the same phaseexcitation, thus CRLH waveguide provides a host transmission line for unequallyspaced arrays. The synthesis, simulation and experiment results show that the proposedarray is reasonable.5. Studies of high impedance transmission line based on metamaterialIn the design of broadband radio systems and modules, particular attention is givento the problems of electromagnetic compatibility and low noise. It is reflected in aultra-wideband (UWB), wide attenuation range, high accuracy, high speed controlattenuator module. By using high impedance transmission line based on metamaterial,crosstalk between various signal lines, control lines and ground plane has been reducedto ensure a reliable operation and calibration.
