With the rapid development of computer application, the modern network manufacturing putforward higher requirements to interoperability between enterprises. A lot of information needsto be exchanged and shared inside interior various systems of one enterprise and between kindsof enterprises. But product data model representation of product data management system isdifferent due to the diversification of enterprises and products. This leads to difficulties of dataexchanging and sharing. In order to solve the above problem, a unified product informationmodel must be established for the enterprises.This article proposes the UPM unified product modeling method based on STEP forenterprises to provide a general framework. The framework is general and efficient and practicalto achieve the enterprise interoperability. In order to further make the UPM product data modelintegrated with manufacturing information management systems (such as CAx, ERP), UPMmodel must be mapped to a relational database as data storage method. This paper studies a newmethod of stored procedures and triggers to map product data to relational database. At the sametime the paper also discusses the method of XML data window engine XDE to map product datato XML.The main contents of this paper include:(1) In order to achieve the enterprise interoperability, a general modeling method needs to beestablished for different types of products. This paper presents an UPM unified modelingframework composed of four parts: PIM (Product Information Model), modeling environmentbased on STEP, six-phase Modeling method and four exchange sharing methods of PIM data. Allthe components of UPM are related to the core PIM and core PIM Association, the modelingprocess is related to data structure of product data model.In this paper, UPM modeling method is used to build seven product data model: productsand versions model, product definition model and product document model used to describe thecharacteristics of product management; shape definition model, geometric model used todescribe the geometric features; tolerance model used to describe the accuracy of feature,materials and the physical properties of model used to describe physical characteristics.Modeling language EXPRESS and its graphical method EXPRESS-G are used to describe ineach model. UPM product modeling is achieved through schema definition and modeling technology, so this product modeling method is compatible, universality, effectiveness andrationality for different types.(2) In the data storage aspect, this paper presents a new use of stored procedures and triggersto accomplish the mapping of UPM product data to relational database. The method of storedprocedures and triggers to complete database mapping has the advantages of reducing occupiednetwork source, reducing network traffic, enhancing the reuse of execution plan. So it has highmaintainability, enhanced safety and consistency. It also could avoid redundancy and ambiguity.(3) In the data exchange and sharing aspect, this paper proposes a new XDE mappingmethod of XML datawindow engine. The XDE framework is constructed to mapping UPM datato XML document after the mapping UPM product data to relational database. Compared withthe traditional XML early binding and late binding, XDE method is more direct and efficient. Italso effectively avoids data ambiguity and semantic loss.(4) To verify the versatility of UPM modeling, efficiency of mapping by stored proceduresand triggers database and rationality of XML mapping by XDE, this paper finally developsmanagement system of product data by PowerBuilder9.0software development tools and SQLServer2008database system based on the B/S and C/S mixed structure of the informationsystem. The main functions include the database connection, product structure browser, XMLmapping file for importing and exporting.
