As Taiwan is an island economy, lacking natural resources, it depends highly upon tradingfor its main source of income and profits, therefore it is fair to say that the advance of Taiwan’seconomy is largely supported by foreign trading. As Taiwan depends on trading, and tradingrequires rapid and accurate information, so media industry plays a vital role in providinginformation. Taiwan’s media industry includes televisions, newspapers, magazines, broadcasting, and the internet; though this industry takes up only less than0.4%of Taiwan’s GDP in the recentyears, yet it influences greatly Taiwan’s development in politics, economy, and society. Theenvironment modification of Taiwan’s media industry, from restricted to liberated, from growing, competing, diminishing, and then to transforming, as well as its process of the revolution andshifts in the market are all profound subjects that deserve close observation and discussion.Research in the past mostly focus on the development of Taiwan’s economy or certain mediabusiness individually, rarely are there studies on the connection between the economic growth andthe five major media business in Taiwan. Through the data gathered, charts and diagramsformulated, this dissertation is constructed with the aim to provide a more comprehensive analysisand innovative opinion, and also hope to make some contributions to those who concern about thedevelopment of Taiwan’s economy and media industry. There are seven directions in this dissertation: research and analysis on the variablesaffecting Taiwan’s economy development, study on the alterations in Taiwan economy structure, discussion of the development and influence of Taiwan’s media, the connection between themedia and economy growth theory, the relation between Taiwan’s media and economy, examination of the inter-related factors in the media industry and economy of Taiwan, and lastly, the industry analysis between Taiwan’s media and economic growth. The economic growth and media industry progress of Taiwan are very unique. Studies andresearch have shown that the media promotes the consumption, raises the capital of human labor, and advances the technology and industry development. New Keynesianism explains that thegovernment and media industry are fundamental in the economic development, and the rescuepolicies during financial crisis especially needs Keynesianism. The governmental policiesrequire the media as a means of propaganda, and to solve the problem of imbalance information. The media also functions as a tool for the society to supervise the government as well as anindispensible part of everyday life, it prevents the risks of immorality because it is much more rational. The external impact of economy fluctuation can be minimized by the media since itlowers the cost of trading. The media minimizes the time for the information to circulate andbreaks the limitation of space; it is the best means to acquire knowledge and information.Furthermore, the media industry stabilizes the social order, and provides recreation andconvenience to citizens. Taiwan’s experience might as well be served as a reference for theother fields.Chapter1is the introduction, and chapter2focuses on discussions and studies on essays anddocuments. In Chapter3, by taking the development of Taiwan’s economy as background andutilizing the method of expense aspect, it probes into the changes of Taiwan’s GDP (includingconsumption, investment, governmental expenses, import and export) along with the wholeeconomy. The research of the progress Taiwan’s five major media business is explored inChapter4. Chapter5presents analysis of total amount on the Taiwan’s media and economicgrowth and other related indexes. Chapter6presents structure analysis on the Taiwan’s mediaand economic growth, including the relations of the media with economy growth theory and otherrelated factors. Chapter7analyzes the industry and Taiwan’s media, it studies the individualproduction output between each industry in Taiwan in actual GDP with the method of productionaspect, and then discusses the media along with the structure alterations of the industry in theeconomic growth. The theory of New Keynesianism is altogether discussed in Chapter7toprove that the media is as important as the government. Finally, with all the aforementioneddiscussions and analyses, a conclusion is presented with a discovery in Chapter8, referencingfrom the research of George Joseph Stigler, Nobel Prize winner of Economic Sciences in1983,and Joseph E. Stiglitz, George Arthur Akerlof, Michael Spence, Nobel Prize winner of EconomicSciences in2001.
