With the development of construction of an innovation-oriented country, the role of the research university to lead science development and technology innovation looms large, as an important part of national knowledge innovation system. At present, quite a number of scientific discovery and technological innovation of our country is done by the research university, so building the world-class research universities is closely related to innovative national strategies. And building the research university not only need a variety of high quality education resources, but more important is to select the president with innovative spirit, who can lead the university toward the world-class goals. The very important position of the research-oriented president in research universities, has significant role and special influence to the construction and development of research universities. Therefore, to research the competency characteristics of the research-oriented president is significant to cultivate research talent, develop research innoviation and improve research performance in researh university.Specifically, centering on the influence of competency characteristics of the research-oriented president on research perfomance in research universities, the research preliminary analyses and presents the research-oriented president’s personality and professional emotion, knowledege and professional skill and management behavior patterns and their effect on the research performance through individual interview, literature research and questionnaire, then structures the research-oriented president factor analytical framework and the initial hypothesis. Proceeding from the Leadership Theory, the Big Five Personality theory and the Behavior Patterns Thoery studies, a theoretical research model has been structured with the research-oriented president’s personality and professional emotion, knowledege and professional skill and management behavior patterns, we collected abundant data through questionnaire survey to the research-oriented presidents of39the985project universities. Then we analysis data by SMRT PLS2.0software and test reliability and validity of the research-oriented president’s competency characteristics through convergent validit discriminant validity. Based on an empirical research and statistics analysis, the theoretical model and hypotheses have been tested one by one. The results indicate that the research-oriented president’s professional emotion, knowledege background, professional skill, decision-making capacity, control capacity, organizing capacity and leadership capacity have positive influence to research perfoemance through organization character. In addition, unproved hypotheses and the reasons have also been discussed through literature analysis and empirical study. According to the research conclusions, combined with practical work, we built an evaluation index system of the research-oriented president based on competence characteristics model in research universities, and put forward policy and recommendations to improve the way of selection, cultivation of the research-oriented president by using the evaluation index system.
