This thesis studies the sociolist ideas of the authors of the Eastern Miscellany using the political culture as the methodology, which has two main purposes:Firstly, this thesis attempts to broaden the study field of the political culture to some extent. The concept of political culture is the product of the development of the contemporary western political science. In the past decades, the study of the political culture in China has not only derived from the scientific component of the western political culture, but also initially developed into the theoretical system of the political culture with the Chinese characteristics. The study of the political culture has increasingly plumped in all aspects of the objects, methods, scope, function, structure, etc, which has led to think about the democratic politics from the perspective of culture. The prosperity of the study on the political culture is reflected in various aspects including the growing studying ranks, gradual deepening of the themes, increasing the results of the study, as well as the founding of the research institutions. Meanwhile, in some traditional studying areas, we may also use the methods of the political culture for reference and provide a new explanation for the diverse pictures of the political phenomena.Secondly, this thesis demonstrates that it is the inevitable result of the historical development that the socialism has been spread and eventually accepted by the Chinese in modern China. In modern China, the Eastern Miscellany has created a discourse platform for the spreading and development of the socialism in China. It translates and evaluates the socialism from the theoretical level, focusing on the integrity, system and authority of the research. Some early intellectuals such as Yu Songhua, Hu Yuzhi went to the Soviet Union to conduct and observe the effect of the implementation of socialism policies from a practical level. Its limitation is that the spreading of the socialism is mainly confined to the narrow intelligentsia circle, not impacting the lower classes. Nevertheless, as the business publications of holding the middle ground, it can adapt to the times and help people understand the socialism. It not only embodies the patriotic emotion and the sense of social responsibility, but also objectively reflects the spreading of the socialism and eventually accepted by the Chinese. It is not an occasional social phenomenon, but the inevitable process of history in modern China. In modern China, in order to save our troubled Chinese nation, earlier intellectuals who had strong social responsibility were concerned about or participated in politics, actively seeking the truth of saving the country. In modern China, one important way for the intellectuals to participate in politics is founding newspapers. The newspaper is not only the survival settlement for them, but also the important carrier to spread knowledge, advocate the proposition of patriotic national salvation. In modern Chinese newspapers, the Eastern Miscellany is the typical text to witness the ideological change track of intellectual group. Because:firstly, the Eastern Miscellany is the longest comprehensive academic journal of all the modern Chinese journals, which is called "the database of modern Chinese history". Founded by the Commercial Press in March11,1904(three decades of the Qing dynasty,Emperor Guangxu) and ended in December1948, the Eastern Miscellany has witnessed and recorded major issues including the internal affairs, diplomatic, military, education, finance, industry, transportation, commerce, religion, literature and other fields in the Republic of China. Secondly, the authors of the Eastern Miscellany have always maintained their objective political positions and cultural character, focusing on the integrity, system and authority of the study of the socialism. They not only translated and evaluated the socialism from the theoretical level, but also some early intellectuals such as Yu Songhua, Hu Yuzhi went to the Soviet Union to conduct on-site, published the article "Moscow Impression"and observed the effect of the implementation of the socialism policies from a practical level. Thirdly, at present the ideological resources are very weak in academic world of the Eastern Miscellany, especially about the excavated material and text of the socialism interpretation. I believe that it is necessary to carry on further study into this weak point for academic research, which is the purpose of writing this thesis. This thesis is divided into seven parts:The introduction describes the origin and the meaning of the study on the sociolist ideas of the authors of the Eastern Miscellany using the political culture as the methodology, the comb on the present studying situation and the description on the method of the political cultural analysis and the method of historical documents analysis.
