Quantitive Research On The Features Of Gombrich’s International Academic Impact

Ernst Hans Josef Gombrich is one of the most influential masters of art in the western art history studies. His studies and theories has taken profound influence on the world art history studies since the second half of the 20 th century. Based on the characteristics of the journalliteratures citation analysis, usingciting articles ofGombrich academic literatures for the study which are included in the Web of Science Citation Index database(including SCI-E, SSCI, A&HCI), the author used quantified interpretation for studying Gombrich overall international impact on the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciencesmainly through bibliometrics such as citation analysis, co-citation analysis, word frequency statistics related methods and knowledge graph, etc..The central topic of the paper is “the Gombrich’s international academic impact feature” which is discussed throughout the context. Around this topic, it develops several sub-areas to further analyse such as the origin of the influence—his academic literature, influenced process, contents, countries and regions, disciplines, authors and relative community under his influence. And from bibliometric perspective of journalliteratures,this paper gives a quantitive description not only according to the overall situation of the influence of Gombrich’s academic thought but also the status of Gombrich’s influenced disciplines, geography and academic community. It objectively presents its international academic influence.The main conclusions of this paper are: the core of Gombrich’s academic contribution is Art and Illusion, which academic status is much higher than his other works, and it has the potential to strongly influence the future academic circles.The period during 1970 s and 1980 s is Gombrich’s first peak of academic influence. The secondinfluence peak is after 2010.The influential theme of Gombrich literature mainly focus on art and art psychology field, and the rest of the theme is more dispersed which has not yet formed a clear topic clustering.On one hand, the influenced region of Gombrich is very widebut mainly concentrated in both Britain and America. The paper reveals the feature that his influence is gradually diffusing from developed countries to developing countries meanwhile from the countries with strong academic powerto the countries with less academic power.On the other hand, Gombrich’s influenceddisciplines are very extensive. The study shows a significant phenomenon of interdisciplinary and disciplinary fusion. And the discipline influenced method shows the feature that the diversification widely diffused into the stage concentration diffusion. From another topic, thediffusion community members of Gombrich are mainly fromfield of history, art and psychology. Furthermore, his relative community members are giants in various study fields involving a broad range of academic fields, forming the academic pedigree of six academic groups: the image study author group of Warburg school, the author group of analytical esthetics, the author group of psychology of visual perception, the author group of psychological analysis, the auther group of poststructuralist semiotics and the author group of art masters in Italian.According to the paper’s viewpoint, the following conclusions are supported by the quantitative analysis on the international journalliteratures: Gombrich is fully deserved the master title in the field of the Western art history, who has very high international academic status and profound influence. It can be expected that his thought and literatures still has extensive and strong impact for the future. In all fields of his academic influence, psychology is the most prominent area as well as its impact is increasedgradually, meanwhileGombrich has the strongest influence in art, however, development trend in art is probably weaker than psychology.Besides, his influence in the field of literature gradually decreased. Gombrich’s academic impact trajectory reflects an academic migration phenomenon that the art history research turned from Europe to USA.The study of Gombrich should not only focus on research methods and academic point of views, it is also needed to pay attention to the features of interdisciplinary development and the knowledge fusion & innovation.
