Abstract/Summary:
Xiong Shili regards saving the Chinese nation and the Chinese culture as his whole life duty. He tries to encourage Chinese life spirits through studying Chinese traditional academic, and solve the social problems the China faced at that time. For this purpose, he quitting Buddhism to Confucianism, absorbs the advantages of many schools to create a "life" centered system of philosophy. He aims to enhance the national spirits of China and achieve the revival of Chinese nation and the development of Chinese culture. The background of Xiong Shili’s life philosophy is that Chinese domestic troubles and foreign invasion are extremely serious. Under the impact of western culture, the disadvantages of traditional culture, such as Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, appeared. Life of the culture is in the danger of being cut off. Xiong Shili actively realized on his own experience that only establishing a kind of spirit of life can save the losting heart of China, and then save the national life and culture life. And the concerns of life have always been the core of Chinese traditional culture. From the date of the emergence, Chinese philosophy emphasized that "Dao" is eternal. Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism all contain the intense life-consciousness. Chinese traditional culture is the main resources of Xiong Shili’s life philosophy. The core and foundation of Xiong Shili’s life philosophy is the ontology of life. Through the transformation and absorption of traditional culture, Xiong Shili insists that the ontology contains two potential——Xi Pi(翕辟),which is the interactions between two kinds of potential use before the formation of the complex universe, and driving the universe changing continuously. Ontology is a changing process, not the existence of an entity. Ontology is active, also called life, constantly changing, and function. Ontology exists in the phenomenon, but not the phenomenon. The noumenon and phenomenon is not one thing, and not two thing neither. Each one is all the ontology; one is all; all is one. So the cosmic ontology is Ben Xin(本心).Because ontology is active, but have no purpose. It has Ren(仁) and emptiness (寂). Thus ontology is moral ontology, which is the source of moral value. For the ontology is the life and the Ben Xin, the value and significance of life lies in accordance with Ben Xin to achieve the transformation of human, nature and society. Through the transformation of Buddhism Zhen Di (真谛) and Su Di (俗谛), Xiong Shili affirmed that the noumenon and phenomenon are true, which provides a place for human activities. And his further distinction between Xing Zhi (性智) and philosophy, between Liang Zhi (量智) and scientific truth, provides the possibility of human understanding and transforming the world. Accordingly, Xiong Shili holds that the moral value of a person is to realize his Ben Xin and to improve the moral cultivation. But this is not the whole content of moral cultivation, and it still needs to practice. Ben Xin shows out as the human activities, so virtues in mind leads to strength in society. Xiong Shili think that the "inside the saint outside the king" can make the mankind to enter the ideal society of Da tong. In the ideal society, everyone can enjoy the ideal personality of the independence, equality, freedom. The society eliminated the private ownerships, borders, races and established the new system, in which everyone played his appropriate part.Xiong Shili’s philosophy regards the ontology and Ben Xin as the generating of life process, and established the spirit of diligence, improving the people’s subjectivity, affirming the social status and role of man in nature. But he emphasized the importance of moral too much, which made him also in the Confucian tradition. He did not solve the problem which is unified as "inside the saint outside the king". And his ideal society just likes another kind of Utopia.
