This dissertation focuses on the study of "The western image in1910s Chinese narrative texf"by discussion the question of how the Chinese literature scholars interpreted the western image in such an important historical transition period and thinking way, cultural psychology and language logic in literature activities."The Chinese narrative text" means broadly every text, such as poetry, prose, novel, theater, ballad, pictorial, newspaper, advertisement, letter, dairy, travel notes, notes. From geographic significance,"The west" involves geography, culture and philosophy fields."Imagine" is not limited to the portray of people, the listing of simple objects, but concerns the whole generalization of the western countries and regions, and the Chinese perspective in literature and cultural views. Therefore,"The western image in1910s Chinese narrative text" refers to the whole generalization of economy, politics, geography, culture and ethnic customs, etc in the west which are displayed in narration texts.The interpretations of the western image in1910s Chinese narrative text are involved in three aspects, the image of the western politics, character image and customs image by answering the questions:"who observed","what was observed","how to observe" and "why to observe" to solve the problems in order to outline the clear developing process of interpretations based on literature itself, restore cultural situation of exchanges between China and western countries. It also provides reference for today’s cultural communication and traditional culture rebuilding.This dissertation has three parts which contain introduction, the body part and conclusion. The body part has four chapters.Introduction:defining and analyzing the research object. Firstly, it puts1910Chinese narrative text into the whole process of Chinese society and cultural development in20century, emphasizing the important references in the relationship between Chinese modern literature, ethnic traditional culture and western literature, dating standard of Chinese modern literature history, independence of Chinese modern literature. Secondly, outlining key concepts about "1910s","Chinese narrative text","the west" and "image" etc in this dissertation and summarizing the difference between "the western image" in1910s and in late Qing Dynasty and1920s, generalizing the research methods which is "who observed","what was observed","how to observe" and "why to observe".Lastly, arranging research present state, values, methods and outline of dissertation.The first chapter targets at discussing the identities of researchers of the western image. By listing and analysis to the scholars who study "the western image". It expounds that those factors which are regional distribution, educational background, family background etc. have potential influence about analyzing "the western image".It also research their role in the process of creating and analyzing the Chinese society and literature transition and "the western image".The second chapter concentrates on "the western politics image".The "politics" is not limited to the narrowed sense of power and distribution. It is spiritual exploration, concentrated expression of self-awareness and self-thinking. This chapter focuses on "the western political image" acquired by scholar’s experience and text understanding, analyzing different political image combined with their current situation and researching the relationship between scholars and politics, between literature and politics, between the transition of society and think and politics.The third chapter mainly talks about the research of the "the western person image"."VPerson" is not the abstract symbol in vague sense, not the simple image belongs to some special category. It focuses on behavior, values and thinking way of the western scholars in order to explore the difference between China and western countries, the similarity with Chinese. So we can find the merits and defections of the western scholars and try to find a way to improve traditional culture.The fourth chapter is the study of the "the western scenic records". It not only includes custom and products, but also includes lifestyle habits, culture landscape, thinking pattern, mentality, etc. it is the combination of materiality and immateriality, presenting the collective consciousness of society in the west. Scenic records and society pattern change are as both cause. This chapter grasps the type, connotation of "scenic records image "from materiality and immateriality, explores the transition of society in the west and lifestyle of the west, summarizing the general law of seeking for modernity.Conclusion:the paper sums up the changes of the western image in1910s Chinese narrative text, explores meandering courses of "Mirror others" and "Reflect self" of Chinese people. And it also provides reference on cultural situation of china in Chinese and Western exchanges.
