This thesis will study Cezanne’s special formal structure method, his in front of nature with "pure intuition", and analyze his formal language, systematically with diagrams. It will start with the formal structure of Cezanne’s paintings, and proceed through the background of its evolution in the history of art.The thesis will be divided into four parts. The first part will discuss the difference between structure and composition in painting. It will backtrack to the development of formal structure in painting, from the early days to the Baroque period, as well as its characteristics at different times. The second part will describe the formal structure in the paintings of Poussin and Delacroix and their influence on Cezanne. The third part will analyzes carefully the formal structure in Cezanne’s paintings. This would include his still life paintings, portraits, bathers, and landscapes, from the time of his mature period to his late years. It will explore the characteristics of his formal structure with diagrams. The fourth part will study Cezanne’s special formal structure method in front of nature, his method of pure intuition. And will compare his method with the theories of Buddhism and Phenomenology, restating his uniqueness.
