The realistic figure painting style of Liu Dawei represents the mainstream style of an age and a group, which is full of his affection for the nation and the state. The thesis uses image analysis, literature survey, art sociology and comparative approach to analyze his aesthetic ideal and artistic language style. We use a case study of the typical painter to explore the characteristics and development process of new period in realistic figure painting language he represents.This paper has three parts. It uses the era’s factors, socio-spiritual outlook, personal experiences, painting ideas and the transition of the drawing elements to analyze Liu Dawei realistic painting portraits language.Firstly, the paper explores Liu Dawei’s artistic thoughts of Combination of Chinese and Western and Worship of the Ancient Spirit, both of which affect the painting’s form, and his artistic emotion to explore the National Identity and the Love of Life, both of wliich affect the painting’s theme. Liu Dawei’s painting aesthetic ideal heritages the spiritual core of the traditional Chinese painting and pursuits the realistic of poetic emotions.Secondly, the paper starts from the point of view of the painting practice through the deep analysis of image. It analyzes from the perspectives of the artists’aesthetic sources, creative intent, ink, composition, color and other aspects, which are on the basis of realistic character modeling. It analyzes Liu Dawei how to use Xu-Jiang System, with Combination of Chinese and Western, to heritage the Chinese Context and develop realistic figure painting language space.Finally, it shows the records and analysis of Liu Dawei personal artistic practice, as well as the study on his contribution in the teaching of Chinese painting to explore the future direction of the realist figure painting and bring new inspiration to the artistic practice. At the same time, the analysis from the perspective of times and personal experience, character, temperament, personal cultivation determines the formation of his painting style.
