Zhou Libo And Foreign Literature

Zhou Libo is an influential writer in the Chinese contemporary literature history. His whole life literary activity is rich and He wrote a large number of works. His novels "The Hurricane" and "Great Changes in a Mountain Village" laid him a novelist in the Chinese contemporary literature history. Since 70 years, Zhou Libo studies began in the 1930s. So far the most studies can be summarized in the framework of Chinese contemporary literature. Moreover, they took his position as a "Rural theme" or "Local Literature" writer. This dissertation attempts from the angle of comparative literature, to see relations between Zhou Libo and foreign Literature, probing various factors of his reception in the special historical and cultural context, and analyze Zhou Libo drawing lessons from foreign literature in his works. It will be from four respects- Zhou Libo’s early literary thoughts, Zhou Libo’s translation, Zhou Libo and foreign reportage and Zhou Libo’s creation, to discuss the interaction between Zhou Libo and foreign literature.Chapter one is trying to give the course of Zhou Libo learning foreign literature, and discuss how the foreign literature plays the role in his early literary conception.Chapter two will be devoted to discuss Zhou Libo’s translation. His translation in Zhou Libo studies is still a blank. Translation is the best embodiment of his in two kinds of cultural and language, constantly in the dialogue as a literary activity. This chapter will analyze his representative work from original to the translation, and reveal how he study and draw lessons from foreign literature by translating, and participate in the construction of Chinese new literature.Chapter three will explores the relationship between Zhou Libo and foreign reportage. This chapter will from Zhou Libo’s Chinese translation "Secret China", discuss why he would translate this work, and how he transferred Kisch’s style in his translation, and later how he put the foreign reportage influences into his own creation. Chapter four will examines how foreign literature influences Zhou Libo’s later novels. This chapter will focus on his works ""The Hurricane" and "Great Changes in a Mountain Village", reveal the role of foreign literature influence in his individual style formation through analysis of his artistic style.All in all, the dissertation by the research hope to summarize how Zhou Libo’s learning, drawing lessons from and changing foreign literature plays role in formation of his literary conception and his creation, and how Zhou Libo plays role in spreading and transformation of "Socialism realism" and in birth of "reportage". Thus question contemporary literature whether is appropriate to define him as a "Rural theme" or "Local Literature" writer, and then try to re-define Zhou Libo.
